Title: Mylar adhesive (Again) UK
Post by: tctele on November 01, 2018, 06:04:23 PM
Hi, My "magic" adhesive has finally run out after 10 years! Seeing as everything has changed in our new PC health & Safety conscious UK as we can't be trusted anymore, what is everyone using and where can I get it please. Tony

Ivan uses thick PVA from Jewson. You can move the mylar around. Have also been recommended contact adhesive from poundland. Don't know what it costs.

I've had success with Deluxe Materials Cover Grip. I'm pretty sure you can get it on your side of the pond ;D

I did an experiment with Clear Gorilla Glue (not the super glue) and Mylar. It stuck really, really well. It does take a long time to cure (like 3 hours) but once it's cured, the Mylar is not coming off.

I think it's a bit heavy, and I don't have a clue what you can use to thin it, but it's tough stuff. Lacquer thinner does not phase it, and it's completely water proof after cure.

Just to give you some head scratching another product which works well and should be easy to find in Great Britain, being from Henkel.

Pattex Contact is a contact cement similar to Evostick. I use it diluted about 1:4 with a thinner for mastic.

A product which appears to be similar in all respects to the old-fashioned Evostick is available from Screwfix as ‘no nonsense contact adhesive’ £9.99 for 1litre and £24.99 for 5litres.

Try Laminating film...  It has a heat activated adhesive and shrinks nicely. Think of  V light and clear Solarfilm.

I always use a glue stick, make sure its fairly new (they tend to go slimey after a while) you can smooth the glue out with your finger, let it dry (overnight?) then iron taut, easy!!

What's the matter with balsaloc ... it's available and works.  Any drawbacks?

I use it and it works. The problem for me is that it 'grabs' and makes it hard to pull it all straight. Ivan uses Jewson thick PVA and you can slide it around a bit
