Lil Longster Sci-Oly Wright Stuff 2015 Airplane (Revised Nov. 21, 2014)
Description: This revised plan for the Lil Longster Sci-Oly Wright Stuff 2015 rubber powered model airplane corrects a major drafting error found in View B-B.

The Lil Longster was designed to qualify for the 2015 Sci-Oly Wright Stuff class “C” (high school) event. This model is fairly typical in configuration for the Wright Stuff event, due to the event’s strict maximum dimension and minimum weight requirements. It features a removable and adjustable tail boom and wing.

The 2015 class “C” Wright Stuff rules are nearly identical to the those of the 2008 class “C” rules. The wing chord for the 2015 model is 8 cm versus 7 cm for the 2008 model, and the stabilizer chord for the 2015 model is 6 cm versus 4.5 cm for the 2008 model. Also, the minimum model weight is 8 grams for the 2015 model versus 7 grams for the 2008 model. A model built to the 2008 class “C” rules will qualify for the 2015 class “C” event provided that the 2008 model is ballasted up to the 8 gram minimum weight requirement. Maximum motor weight remains at 2 grams, which includes any o-rings.

The 2015 class “C” Wright Stuff rules allow the competitor to build a propeller or use a pre-assembled propeller, as long as it does not exceed 24 cm in diameter. The Ikara propellers are the most efficient pre-assembled propellers readily available and Ikara offers a propeller builder’s kit, available from Freedom Flight Models, for those competitors who wish to build their own prop. Boron is the only material not allowed on the 2015 Wright Stuff model airplanes, and there is no restriction on the type of covering material used.

Looks like a competitive model!

Thanks for putting this on line! And thanks for sorting out the specs and comparison to the 2008 Wright Stuff version.

Thanks for the plan. Designed my own and it has all the attributes and weights of yours except I designed rounded wingtips purely for aesthetic reasons. Love being 70 and working with 16 yr old really smart kids. Now, if I can get them to work intelligently...

Winning Stuff

This is a good design as an SOWS competition plane of choice. We built two and they both perform well. This design has a large decalage so the stability is very good. The CG location can be met exactly per drawing when the wing posts are positioned using a standard SO TB rotational adjustment for left turning circle is very good plus to allow using a shorter transportation box. Build the TB mounting socket angle to achieve the design decalage. Provided the proper selection of the materials (available from local hobby store), wrapped with WalMart produce bag HDPE, the model can fly very well if all dimensions and angles are correct. In a 40 some ft field house, we achieved over 3 min using a 2g rubber band which range from 0.081 to 0.094, depending on the temperature and lubrication. This was our third generation build for SOWS. A lot of fun. Look forward to seeing any improved design with features such as "Leading Edge" for more low speed loft. Thanks much for the post.

How could I adapt this plan to comply with the new 2016 rules for this event? The wingspan needs to be less that 40 cm and the stabilizer needs to be less than 20 cm. Should I just change all the dimensions by the same ratio or .....?

Revising Lil Longster to 2016 rules.

The Lil Longster could be redesigned to comply with the 2016 rules as follows:

1. Move the wing tip ribs inboard to the sliced ribs located just inboard of the tip ribs. Make sure to compensate for the 1/32" thick tip plates when relocating tip ribs for the 40 cm span rule.
2. Move the wing trailing edge forward to obtain 5.9 cm chord and shorten wing ribs by cutting aft end of ribs.
3. Install the stabilizer tip plates on the wing tips to increase the dihedral effect for the shorter span wing.
4. Eliminate the stabilizer tip ribs and evenly re-space the remaining ribs to maintain 25 cm including the stab tip plates.
5. Move trailing edge of stabilizer forward to obtain 4.9 cm chord and shorten stab ribs by cutting aft end of ribs.
6. Shorten the stabilizer tip plates to 5 cm and install on stabilizer tip ribs.
7. Cut the 24 cm Ikara propeller down to 20 cm. If you can afford it, buy several 24 cm props and try different blade shapes.

other differences

My first coaching gig in a number of years. I don't know what the rules were for last year, reduction in span and chord, lighter weight for rubber, so what else about this design should be scaled back? tail boom shortened?
