Gray thumb nails

Bruce, I have a concern with the gray thumb nails I often see when I make a post.  

On the page where I'm making my write up I often find odd attachments that I have nothing to do with. These don't appear to post other than as gray squares.

My concern is that these may be eating up server space.

Should I try to remove these odd attachment prior to posting? Again I have no idea where they are coming from.
