IMO, would not surprise me that an index pointer got corrupted, and the software code tried to obtain data in a non-existent location. Just too bad that the software didn't have an error trap set up where it would at least recover on that bad record instead of bringing the house down. This could be the reason why when you attempted to restore the old database, that it went berzerk again.
