FLIGHT REPORT N0 1  2024  FEB 21 2024            Page  1  of    4

I snapped awake to the beautifully lit predawn sky,  and I ran for the camera -  there is really only a short window to get the full color pic.    Here are four pics spanning from right to left.   Blanket Wave Cirrus Stratus?

Pic #1     2368  MED   pre dawn sky
Pic #2     2369  MED   pre dawn sky
Pic #3     2370  MED   pre dawn sky
Pic #4     2371  MED   pre dawn sky

Pic #5     2388 MED     Flight Morning walk-around in the Hangar.

The forecast was looking way too windy, so I thought I would try flying first thing in the morning when the wind was at its lowest speed.

8:07  AM   34 deg F (feels like 25 deg F),  Winds blowing from the South at 11 mph  gusting to  16 mph.   There was not really any frost on the grass, and the ground was thawing out quick,   to soft lumpy sod.   Even though the grass was short,  it was a soft cushion to crash your plane on ...

Pic #6     2387 SNIP     Wind on the flag at Jackson Park Entrance.

Pic #7     2386 Snip   Wind on the flag at the Spitfire and Hurricane.

It was cold and windy and dreary on the open Cricket Field.  I had to stick my hands in my pockets between flights.  I got 6 flights and 22 pics.

Today's flights were climbing way too fast,  and it seemed to be releasing off of the tow line hook too early,  before reaching the directly overhead flight apex,  and then release at the apex, while still on the tow line.    But it was releasing the plane straight into the incoming wind,  with no "kiting" of the glider, left or right,  into the ground, and cartwheeling.

Pic # 8     2384  MED     Tow line is 23 feet of braided white cord string ( a key ring is used for sliding off of the fuse tow hook),  and the other end is attached to 7 feet of 3/32 inch rubber (the loop tied into  the other end of the rubber,   gets staked out into the ground)

Pic #9     2372  MED     Here we are on the Cricket Field looking South - wind from the South.

Pic #10     2373  MED     Looking SouthSouthEast.

Pic #11     2375  MED      Same as above.

The object of today's flights,  was to keep the Glider inside the Cricket Field,  as there are a lot of full size kite eating trees lining the perimeter.

SIX HIGH START TOWLINE FLIGHTS

Pic #12     Flight #1     2376  MED     Perfect straight out tow launch into big wind.  It came off of the tow hook perfectly.  The flight had a couple of dipsy doodles.      5 seconds

Pic #13     Flight #2     2377  SNIP     I added a bit more down on the stabilizer elevator tabs.  The wind is coming from the left.   It rose straight up on the tow line, with a big wing-over loop,  right on top over me,  and headed straight to where it is on the pic - sitting in the middle just above the horizon, and pointing left (south).   This all blew directly West from my launch spot ie no net penetration south into the wind.   It came down to a perfect landing into the wind,  but getting near the tree line.     5 seconds

Pic #14     Flight #3     2378  MED     It went up to the right a little on the line, came off the hook and came down in a BIG missile dive,   but RECOVERS just in the nick of time.     4  seconds

Pic #15     Flight #4     2379  SNIP     The flight shoots off to the left,  into a perfect flight into the wind,  to a perfect landing.   In the pic, the right evergreen tree, one third up the trunk, just to the right, on landing final glide.        6 seconds

Well ...  not the greatest flight report,  but a lot of exciting dives !!   It is really just a hope and a prayer,   when I let go of the tailplane on the launch.   LOL   It's a good feeling, though,  to get out there and experiment with this thing we call "Theory of Flight".      Especially good when coming home with the model -  as opposed to leaving it in a tree  -  and good coming home with no damage !    I did really smash it up badly in a tree a few years ago - hence the new rear end ...
Now ...  lots to think about -  how do I fix the big stall and dive ??   Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.
First I must get it on the balance pin coffee jars.

Get out and fly

FLIGHT REPORT N0 2  2024  FRI FEB 23 2024

FEB 25 2024

Well,  after that first Osprey Glider Flight session this year,  on Feb 21 where the glider was porpoising a lot,   I did check the balance when I got home  -   I had thought those few test glides that appeared good, were indeed good,  so I thought I would just go out and fly without really checking the balance.   Well,  it WAS out of balance  -  another amateur move on my part ...    So Mandrake and Bloodroot added clay weight to the nose to get the balance right.

Pic #1     2393     Mandrake and Bloodroot set up the glider on the balance pins.

FLIGHT REPORT N0 2  2024  FRI FEB 23 2024

The weather was a lot warmer that the last one Feb 21 2024.
50 deg F (feels like 46)  winds blowing 16 mph from the North East,  gusting to 22 mph   49% humidity.

We got to the field at 3:50 PM.

Pic #2     2395     Wind on the flags of Jackson Park

The weight that was added to the top of the nose,  really worked.   I got some good pics of the few flights.   Of course it needed that extra weight to balance it  --  because of the new larger tailplane,  that taken from an old worn out stick fuse, pylon mounted, high wing Flyboy,  that was not fixable anymore.

Pic #3     2396     First flight  heading straight out just left of the tall spruce.
I got several nice flights,  but the last three flights all "kited in" to the right,  and ended up breaking a cross member ledge on the fuse, that raised the trailing edge of the wing,  about 1/32" or so.

Pic #4     2397      Landed far side of the Pitch.

Pic #5     2398      Going left.   Cricket players.

FLIGHT REPORT N0 2  2024  FRI FEB 23 2024

Feb 25 2024

The best flight was about 8 seconds.   This one did a full circle like it was on a on a predetermined route,  just as if it was a rubber powered plane.  It flew out high, released to the right and fought the wind, tuned further sideways,  then curving started down wind and picking up speed, coming back even with me, then continued downwind gaining more speed, still turning right because of the rudder tab offset,  and finished off flying low about 4 feet off the ground, with speed, for a long ways, back towards me, just down wind,  and curls right in in front of me, back into the wind,  and does a  perfect slow soft landing, right in front of me, and the kite flyers.   A-HAAA !!   :o This was one of the best flights.   ;D

Pic #7     2400     High flight

Pic #8     2401     Another great flight

Pic #9     2402      Lining up the launch.

Pic #10     2403     Osprey glider going to the right and down over the couple flying their kite.

Pic #11     2404     Soft landing  longest circle.

But,  the next, and last three,  flights,  of this day,  were all to end in crash landings,  kiting in to the right.     Then I got a bunch of nice kite flying pics.   That kite flew so well,  all you had to do was pull on the single string and up it went !!   Plus, he mastered it,  floating it all over, and running with it ...

OSPREY GLIDER REPAIR AFTER 3 KITE INS FLIGHT SESSION #2  FEB 23 2024

Wed Feb 28 2023

BROKEN RAISED CROSSMEMBER LEDGE REPAIR  -  ( for making the wing trailing edge to sit a little higher )

I had broken the crossmember ledge that was glued on the top of the fuse,  where it lifts the rear of the wing about one millimeter.    This was after only six flights on Flight Report #2  Fri Feb 23 2024.

      Here is the easy repair.

Pic #1     2420 SNIP MED SMALL     A long strip on top and a shorter strip on the bottom (piece is broken off) make up this crossmember.

Pic #2     2421  MED     Mandrake glues new balsa strips together and clamps them up with clothespins.   Bloodroot uses scotch tape to tape up big tissue tears in the fuse rear from a  "bad" launch (fingers somehow got in the way).

Pic #3     2422  SNIP SMALL     M & B glue the crossmember strip to the fuse.

Pic #4     2438  MED     Here you can see how much that little cross member raised the rear of the wing.

Pic #5     2435  MED     Ready To Fly  !!   This repair was made just in time for Flight Report #3  -    perfect weather on Mon Feb 26 2024,   where it flew wonderfully and got its record 17 sec flight,  from 17 high start tow line launches.

FLIGHT REPORT N0 3  2024  MON FEB 26 2024

Wed Feb 28 2024

It turned out to be a stellar day on the Cricket Field of Jackson Park,  Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Pic #1     WEATHER FORECAST  MON FEB 26 2024     This was the weather forecast for the morning,  and it wasn't far off, except it got clouded over with a thin layer of puffy ball orange peel cumulonimbus cloud clouds.

FLIGHT MORNING

Pic #2     2436  MED    The Osprey Glider,  20",   on the board,   patiently waiting ...

Pic #3     2437  MED     Mandrake and Bloodroot perform the Pre flight inspection and gather 3 Towlines,  and a bag of spare wing tie down elastics.   The Tow Lines  are   #1 -  23 feet string cord and seven feet of  3/32"  0.094" single strand rubber,   #2 -  23 feet of string and seven feet of 1/16"    0.063"  single strand of rubber,  #3 - 23 feet of string and seven feet of  0.045" single strand rubber.     We only ended up using just the  3/32" rubber launch cord.
You can  also see the extra gray clay weight added to the top of the nose.

Pic #4     2440  MED     Wind on the flag (it was stuck from fully unfurling) at the Spitfire and Hurricane replica site,  on the walk out to the Cricket Field.    When I left the apartment at 11:07 AM,  it was 41 deg F (feels like 34)  with winds blowing from the East at 12 mph gusting to 19 mph ,  and low humidity - forgot to write it down ...

Pic #5     2441  MED     I arrived at the field at  11:30 AM,  and I walked all around the whole field,  picking out a lot of field perimeter sticks (branch twigs) that were sticking high,  a couple of feet out of the ground,  and then I gave that construction cone a boot,  and look what was underneath it.     But the grass and ground was really soft and fluffy.

I got 15 flying pics and a couple were hard to pick the plane out of.    I tried different positions of the tow line peg,  and adjusted the directions of the launch.   The wind was pretty steady from the East and gradually moving to the North East,  but it was changing directions a little bit too  -  enough to make me throw up some grass into the air before launches.

The first flight (no pic)  went up too high and stalled with a big dive and just missed impaling itself on my "sort of",  split firewood stake.   But after that,  I hit the right launch direction,  and the second flight pic 2442 was a nice launch and I got 8 sec on a perfect flight,  turning right after tow line release, and gliding in a right hand circle.    This is how the rest of the flights basically went  -  launch pointing due East towards the old Band Stand building,  it goes high into the wind,  comes off the hook so nicely,  and continues into its long right hand turn,  to down wind, and then crosswind,  to landing.

March 1 2024

Thanks for the replies guys.  Hello John.   And hello to all of you other faceless names out there in Internut Land.    Yes,  John,  I had to put my best buddy "Trapper" (yellow lab) down,   one year and nine months ago, on May 14 2022.   :'(  Plus I had surgery myself,  four months after that.   We both could barely walk.   He was eleven and three quarter years old.
So that is three pet dogs in the last 20 years.   I have spent all of my emotion and energy on dogs,  and I am now not healthy enough to be rolling around on the ground with a new pup,   or even running around with a new pup.    I had the joy of three puppies,  and that is more than my fair share.
Trapper did actually accompany me on all of those flights of every model plane that I ever flew  in Jackson Park  (plus three walks every day).   It is not the same without him.

Hi Richard,

Nice to see you flying again.

I am so sorry to hear about Trapper.  We lost our beloved dog of many years about 18 months ago, my wife and I have never been without a dog in nearly 30 years of marriage, our kids have known nothing else so it left a hole.

This little chap filled that hole quite nicely.  Even though we have had a number of dogs that lived to ripe old ages, we have never had a puppy, all have been rescue dogs or dogs that have been “orphaned” when their owner has passed. Two have been 5 years plus, so the puppy stage has long gone and no house training to do! The point being that if where you are in Canada is anything like the UK there are plenty of mature dogs who need a new home, perhaps worth a look?

ATB

Andrew

Hi Andrew.    It is so good that people do adopt the old rescue dogs.   I know all of the dog walkers in the park,  and it is surprising how many of them are rescue dogs,  and repeat rescue dog rescuers.   And the temporary asylum sponsors for dogs - what is the word  FOSTER ?     They are all encouraging me to get a rescue also, and referring me to the websites.
One other elderly couple adopted a rescue Greyhound racer.    He said it is costing him an average of  $15  per day with medical bills alone.    It is getting more expensive all of the time.    I am on limited pension,  and since I don't drive anymore ( I just take a taxi or bus ),  I find that I have just enough money to retire sort of comfortably.
So,  I am still thinking about a dog.     I only lasted one day after each of my first two dogs died, before getting another one  -   I know what that is like too.    And I do watch a lot of videos with dogs like canoe camping, van life people,  new puppy compilations LOL etc all kinds of stuff.
I also would not want to "orphan" a dog if I adapted one too -  I actually had thought about that ...  So,  we will see how it goes in the next few months.     If you never had a pup,  the puppies are probably somewhat similar to  baby humans LOL   They are pretty funny together in the videos.  Thanks for your kind words.

Richard

PS   Your new dog looks sweet.

Sweet in looks but a bit of a rogue…

He is a Patterdale.  They are …ahem…. wilful little dogs.  We always wanted one, and were very lucky to get him as a rescue.

Take care.

Andrew

Guys the hippocket forum gets better every day now that Ratz is firmly behind the controls, AND finally we have the beloved LASTWOODSMAN back at the keyboard and out on the field! Welcome back Richard, and I am sure all your past worldly pets have left notice at St. Peter's desk to be on the watch for a guy with a neatly trimmed beard and a backwards hat!

Sad news Richard . i can understand your position - having lost companion dogs and cats.

It's great to have you posting your flight reports again though.

Cheers

MONDAY MARCH 25 2024

There is a flying day in the forecast,   for the Osprey Glider 20".     The tow hook is in the perfect position and shape,  as called out on the plan,  and it is ready to fly.   I gotta get out there like the Glider men of Port Meadow.    Friday March 29  2024 is the day  -   kids are in school,  and the Cricket players are there on the field,  all day Saturday and Sunday,  and from  4 or 5 PM til dark,  every day now.   So I better get out there when the opportunity arises.

It is really a lot of fun,  just pulling back the rubber and letting it go,   way easier than stretch winding a rubber powered model on a winding stooge ...  and easier to re-peg the stake into safer spots,  as the wind changes, etc.

OSPREY GLIDER   20  INCH      WED APRIL 24 2024

Weather forecast  -  a couple of good flying days a head

Well,  I did get in Flight #4 on Thur March 28  -  it got too windy and it  "does power dive the model into the ground".     I got in  8  flights -  the longest was 10 sec.    This was a short flight report,  of which I put in a short version thereof,  in  "What did you do airplane wise today"  Reply #295  on March 28 2024.     I just now finished the easy repair,   because ....  it looks like a flying day tomorrow  Thurs  April 25 2024,   and another flying day six days later,  on Wed May 1 2024.

Flying Day

The hourly forecast is swell,   and only getting better all day !!    I am up,  but it is still very cold,  and we had a  frost last night during the  99%  waning full moon.    We are ready to fly though.    The repairs are solid.   No real hurry to get out to the Cricket field right away.

The weather at  8:17 AM  was   34 deg F   feels like 28,  winds from the North at 7 mph,  gusting to  11 mph,   75 % humidity.

Before going into Jackson Park,  I saw the boys at the next apt bldg outside having a smoke.   I usually stop by for a little chit chat on my way for groceries.    This time,  I showed them my Osprey Glider and showed them how the tow line works.

This was a beautiful Spring morning,  and the grass was long and wet with dew.   This was another stellar day,  setting my new record of 24  High Start Towline launches -  prev record was 17.     The longest flights were 15 sec and 14 sec.

The Cricket players let me launch between their pitches.     The Cricket guys left after a while,  while I whiled the time away further,  by staying and continuing flying ... at leisure,   and moving my stake position to several different places,  now that I had the whole Cricket field to myself.

I did not get a lot of good flying pics -  I left the shutter door shut a couple of time -  so I made up for it by documenting the burst of Spring in Jackson Park in 2014.

The best flying pic is probably #2773 of Flight #15,  where I accidentally had hit the left stab tab down,  causing the glider to circle much tighter to the right,  of a tight, fast,  one and one half circle flight,  coming right at me,  just like an untrimmed rubber model !

Pic #7     2759     Oh no  -  the Cricket players were already there -  it turns out they let me fly in between pitches to the batter

Pic #8     2760     They were just practicing and having fun.   These were the East Indian University of Windsor students,  and not the regular League players

I did end up eventually sending a few flights,   finishing off their long slow glides,  right through the Cricket players and across the Pitch ...  Also,  the Glider flights never kited down into the ground,  while on the tow line.

The grass of the Cricket Field was only skimmed over once a few days earlier,  by the mowers,  with the blades cutting at a high Spring setting.

The first two flights were really embarrassing  -  straight up,  come off the hook,  high stall,  and straight down.    But the Cricket guys thought it was good,  and were clapping.  ( ? )   ???

Even worse,  Flight #3 worked so well,  after I added nose weight clay,  that it promptly flew left and came a back and flew into my Spruce tree.   It stopped,  tumbled down a bit,  gave a struggle,  and flew out.   The Cricket guys were applauding now.

Pic #19     2773     Flight # 15   8 sec  It was an unusually tight one and one half circle right,    and was bearing down on me,  I bravely stood my ground,  and panned the camera with a hard swing,  and wrote into the log note book   9" x 6"  ruled pages cardboard covers and snag free coil binding,  "hope I got the pic"  ...  I did !!   It turns out,  I had bumped the left stab tab downwards by accident,  hence the tight right hand turn.

Even more embarrassment,  Flight #4,   I shout the "Here goes",   I launch,   and the wing detaches right away, and comes fluttering down,  spinning back and forth,  along its lengthwise axis,  as I desperately and hopelessly,  kept trying to grab that wing out of the air as it floated down,  to no avail  -  really embarrassing  ....   I found the rubber tie-downs for the wing (I have a spare bag full of them just in case).

So that is zero for four attempts.    But Lastwoodsman came back.    The next three flights were perfect right hand flights of five,  seven,  and 15 seconds (longest of the day    Pic #2761    Flight #7     high,  delayed release,  and long slow finish right through the Cricket guys).

Flights after that went 13, 5, 9, 8, 6, 7, 9, 8  Pic #2273 Flight #15, 11, 8, 6, 7, 10, 6, 5, 5, 14 sec on the 24th Flight.     Flight #23  hit the Spruce a second time,  bounced off and down to the ground.    And Flight #24 was 14 seconds,  launching between gusts of wind.    So considering that,  I called it a day,  and packed up.    No damage.    The Flying Gods were shining on me,  so I did not want to push my luck.

There was still dew on the grass,  and it was such a nice walk out,   that I walked 8 more blocks to grab a coffee to go, from my little Uptown restaurant -  only open for breakfast and lunch.  They have planes hanging from the ceiling and pics of planes etc so I felt right at home -  always a conversation starter.   ( this was just my second time bringing in the Glider -  the first was when I got the record 17 sec flight on flight Report #3 ).   Then on the way back I stopped at the grocery store to see my buddy who organized the Fastball League in Jackson Park -  I actually interrupted one of his baseball games one time, when my 22" Cabinaire promptly popped over the fence and flew into the outfield - and his boss the grocery store owner, my age,  who also got a kick out of my story.   They were very interested and all smiles.   Plus I stopped at the seasonal flower and vegetable stand that they open every year and showed them.   Even the taxi drivers recognize me ... "Was that you with the airplanes?" from back in the old days when I was cranking out the flight reports,  and crossing a very busy intersection of cars to get into Jackson Park.

When I got home at  12:05 PM,  the weather was  43 deg F  feels like 39,  winds from the north  7 mph gusting to 11 mph,  humidity  65%.

So,  I had fun.    Get out and fly ...

And that is it for my OSPREY GLIDER FLIGHT SESSION #5       THUR APRIL 25 2024  Flight Report

The end.

     Thanks John.

And today Thur May 2 2024,  is another Flying Day.   On the early morning walk out to my little woods ecosystem,  where the spring birds were all singing,  at 7:10 AM  ( sunrise is 6:25 AM ),  lo and behold,   the new University Student Cricket players were out practicing again,   and getting "soakers" in their running shoes,  because of the drenching sopping wet lonnnnng grass,   full of dew.     Of course Lastwoodsman had on his big rubber boots.    They will be gone later on in the morning.    But the big thing is the evaporating dew ....   which sags and wrinkles the tissue of my Glider,   and is known to cause no lift,  just descent !!

If I don't get out flying again today,  I will be kicking myself in the summer,   when there is a drought and hard ground and short grass,  and high wind ...

Here are two snips of the weather report for today
