OSPREY GLIDER   20  INCH      WED APRIL 24 2024

Weather forecast  -  a couple of good flying days a head

Well,  I did get in Flight #4 on Thur March 28  -  it got too windy and it  "does power dive the model into the ground".     I got in  8  flights -  the longest was 10 sec.    This was a short flight report,  of which I put in a short version thereof,  in  "What did you do airplane wise today"  Reply #295  on March 28 2024.     I just now finished the easy repair,   because ....  it looks like a flying day tomorrow  Thurs  April 25 2024,   and another flying day six days later,  on Wed May 1 2024.

OSPREY GLIDER   20  INCH      THUR APRIL 25 2024

Flying Day

The hourly forecast is swell,   and only getting better all day !!    I am up,  but it is still very cold,  and we had a  frost last night during the  99%  waning full moon.    We are ready to fly though.    The repairs are solid.   No real hurry to get out to the Cricket field right away.

Pic #1     HOURLY FORECAST  THUR APRIL 25 2024   8 AM  TO  1 PM

Pic #2     HOURLY FORECAST  THUR APRIL 25 2024   1 PM  TO  7 PM

This is a big deal.    The Flying Gods are shining their light on us so far  -   a very rare day indeed!    Grin

The weather at  8:17 AM  was   34 deg F   feels like 28,  winds from the North at 7 mph,  gusting to  11 mph,   75 % humidity.

Before going into Jackson Park,  I saw the boys at the next apt bldg outside having a smoke.   I usually stop by for a little chit chat on my way for groceries.    This time,  I showed them my Osprey Glider and showed them how the tow line works.

This was a beautiful Spring morning,  and the grass was long and wet with dew.   This was another stellar day,  setting my new record of 24  High Start Towline launches -  prev record was 17.     The longest flights were 15 sec and 14 sec.

The Cricket players let me launch between their pitches.     The Cricket guys left after a while,  while I whiled the time away further,  by staying and continuing flying ... at leisure,   and moving my stake position to several different places,  now that I had the whole Cricket field to myself.

I did not get a lot of good flying pics -  I left the shutter door shut a couple of time -  so I made up for it by documenting the burst of Spring in Jackson Park in 2014.

The best flying pic is probably #2773 of Flight #15,  where I accidentally had hit the left stab tab down,  causing the glider to circle much tighter to the right,  of a tight, fast,  one and one half circle flight,  coming right at me,  just like an untrimmed rubber model !

Pic #7     2759     Oh no  -  the Cricket players were already there -  it turns out they let me fly in between pitches to the batter

Pic #8     2760     They were just practicing and having fun.   These were the East Indian University of Windsor students,  and not the regular League players

Pic #9     2761     Sailing along ...  This is the longest flight of the day  Flight #7  15 seconds

Pic #10     2762     Nice high releases off of the tow line

Pic #11     2763     My set-up spot on the edge of the field

Pic #12     2766     In the long grass.   We have some very good grass pics

I did end up eventually sending a few flights,   finishing off their long slow glides,  right through the Cricket players and across the Pitch ...  Also,  the Glider flights never kited down into the ground,  while on the tow line.

The grass of the Cricket Field was only skimmed over once a few days earlier,  by the mowers,  with the blades cutting at a high Spring setting.

Pic #13     2767     The glider is right above the guy kneeling,  three quarters up the tree and going right and down.   one guy is looking at it

Pic #14     2768     Another soft landing

Pic #15     2769     Cruising fast downwind

Pic #16     2770     Another nice release

Pic #17     2771     Another landing

Pic #18     2772     My setup under the Spruce tree,  and the pegged-out towline

The first two flights were really embarrassing  -  straight up,  come off the hook,  high stall,  and straight down.    But the Cricket guys thought it was good,  and were clapping.  ( ? )   Huh

Even worse,  Flight #3 worked so well,  after I added nose weight clay,  that it promptly flew left and came a back and flew into my Spruce tree.   It stopped,  tumbled down a bit,  gave a struggle,  and flew out.   The Cricket guys were applauding now.

Pic #19     2773     Flight # 15   8 sec  It was an unusually tight one and one half circle right,    and was bearing down on me,  I bravely stood my ground,  and panned the camera with a hard swing,  and wrote into the log note book   9" x 6"  ruled pages cardboard covers and snag free coil binding,  "hope I got the pic"  ...  I did !!   It turns out,  I had bumped the left stab tab downwards by accident,  hence the tight right hand turn.

Pic #21     2775     Way out there

Even more embarrassment,  Flight #4,   I shout the "Here goes",   I launch,   and the wing detaches right away, and comes fluttering down,  spinning back and forth,  along its lengthwise axis,  as I desperately and hopelessly,  kept trying to grab that wing out of the air as it floated down,  to no avail  -  really embarrassing  ....   I found the rubber tie-downs for the wing (I have a spare bag full of them just in case).

So that is zero for four attempts.    But Lastwoodsman came back.    The next three flights were perfect right hand flights of five,  seven,  and 15 seconds (longest of the day    Pic #2761    Flight #7     high,  delayed release,  and long slow finish right through the Cricket guys).

Flights after that went 13, 5, 9, 8, 6, 7, 9, 8  Pic #2273 Flight #15, 11, 8, 6, 7, 10, 6, 5, 5, 14 sec on the 24th Flight.     Flight #23  hit the Spruce a second time,  bounced off and down to the ground.    And Flight #24 was 14 seconds,  launching between gusts of wind.    So considering that,  I called it a day,  and packed up.    No damage.    The Flying Gods were shining on me,  so I did not want to push my luck.

There was still dew on the grass,  and it was such a nice walk out,   that I walked 8 more blocks to grab a coffee to go, from my little Uptown restaurant -  only open for breakfast and lunch.  They have planes hanging from the ceiling and pics of planes etc so I felt right at home -  always a conversation starter.   ( this was just my second time bringing in the Glider -  the first was when I got the record 17 sec flight on flight Report #3 ).   Then on the way back I stopped at the grocery store to see my buddy who organized the Fastball League in Jackson Park -  I actually interrupted one of his baseball games one time, when my 22" Cabinaire promptly popped over the fence and flew into the outfield - and his boss the grocery store owner, my age,  who also got a kick out of my story.   They were very interested and all smiles.   Plus I stopped at the seasonal flower and vegetable stand that they open every year and showed them.   Even the taxi drivers recognize me ... "Was that you with the airplanes?" from back in the old days when I was cranking out the flight reports,  and crossing a very busy intersection of cars to get into Jackson Park.

Pic #31     2787     White blossoms as we leave the edge of the Cricket Field

Pic #32     2788     Big Willow tree and three charred Dawn Redwood trees

Pic #33     2789     Last two pics on the walk out  -  wind on the flag

Pic #34     2790     Last pic -  wind on the flag on the walk out

When I got home at  12:05 PM,  the weather was  43 deg F  feels like 39,  winds from the north  7 mph gusting to 11 mph,  humidity  65%.

So,  I had fun.    Get out and fly ...

And that is it for my OSPREY GLIDER FLIGHT SESSION #5       THUR APRIL 25 2024  Flight Report

The end.

     Thanks John.

And today Thur May 2 2024,  is another Flying Day.   On the early morning walk out to my little woods ecosystem,  where the spring birds were all singing,  at 7:10 AM  ( sunrise is 6:25 AM ),  lo and behold,   the new University Student Cricket players were out practicing again,   and getting "soakers" in their running shoes,  because of the drenching sopping wet lonnnnng grass,   full of dew.     Of course Lastwoodsman had on his big rubber boots.    They will be gone later on in the morning.    But the big thing is the evaporating dew ....   which sags and wrinkles the tissue of my Glider,   and is known to cause no lift,  just descent !!

If I don't get out flying again today,  I will be kicking myself in the summer,   when there is a drought and hard ground and short grass,  and high wind ...

Here are two snips of the weather report for today

FOLK ART AND CEILING PICS OF MY LITTLE "UPTOWN" RESTAURANT     Thur May 9 2024

This is my little quaint "Uptown" restaurant I go to  -  they have great fries and gravy.    I have strolled in here with a couple of models  -   twice with the  20 inch  Osprey  glider after stellar flight sessions.    There is a lot of  Folk Art  and planes and such,  hanging from the ceiling and on the walls.

PS   I am saving that last glider flight report for a little bit longer  ....   too busy with the Mystery Man glider right now  ...
