Title: Phantom Flash wing dimensions / offset?
Post by: randoloid on October 28, 2017, 04:22:37 PM
I'm not exactly sure where I downloaded this PDF of the plans- it's obviously old and has been scanned - but I noticed something I thought was odd.

On my plan anyway...The wing halves are not equal.
Left measures 8" and the right measures 8.25"

Is this correct? I've saved the PDF out as an image at 100% if anyone wants to see for themselves

thanks
rando

I traced my plan from one of those copies.  On mine, it works out to be 16" PROJECTED.  Each panel is about 3/32" longer than 8" - BUT they are equal.  I doubt there was any intention to have an imbalanced set of panels (although I have seen this on a different OT ROG Stick).

Hi Rando,

This is common in photocopies of photocopies.  Distortion along one axis or both creeps in, and it's not immediately apparent to the naked eye.

I've made it a habit to lay a sheet of gridded drafting vellum (see attached file) over any plan before pinning down balsa.  Establish a datum line, check for symmetry, and tweak accordingly.

Thanks guys!

I figured it was a issue of the copy but thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.  I've redrawn the wing and it's now symmetrical.

I measured the wing on an "original" Comet Kit A-1 plan. The wing span measured 16 1/16 inches with the right wing being 1/16 inch longer than the left. Was it designed and/or drafted that way? Has the paper changed dimensions after being printed more than a half century ago? No way to know for sure but it is not enough difference to worry about.

I also noticed that the right wing was longer than the left. I assumed that the original was designed to fly to the right. All indoor duration models fly to the left and have a longer left inboard wing to counteract torque. I redrew the wing to have the left inboard wing longer.
