Title: Geo Embrysol indoor FAC Embryo

After the unfortunate 7:00 OOS flight on my Scout Flier, I got to work on a new indoor model.  The pandemic and other projects have hindered progress, but I have finished the model which I call the Geo Embrysol.  It is a parasol wing built  using geodetic construction.  I chose the USA 22 for the wing foil and the stab has a thinned Clark Y as well as the rudder.  I designed it to fly left, so the rudder is built with flat on the left side so it lifts right turning the nose left.  The wing is built with tip dihedral.

I designed and 3D printed rib cutting templates to cut the geo wing ribs, stab ribs, and rudder ribs.  The stab and rudder ribs are cut from 1/32" x 1/8" and notched.  The ribs are cut from 1/32" x 3/8" x 4.25" strips.  Outlines were made using 1/32" x 1/8" and then applied Elmer's glue stick and wrapped.  I used a magnetic board to help form the outlines.

Model is designed with removeable wing and landing gear.  Wing is retained using a fixed 0.020" wire on the front of the cabanes and 0.015" spring wires on the back of the cabanes.  It works nicely and retains the wing securely. 1/16" aluminum tubing is glued into the wing at gusseted locations.  Landing gear is a friction fit into a slot. 
 
I used Easybuilt Light Cub Yellow tissue and printed the colors on with Durabrite ink on an Epson printer.  Model finished @ 11g RTF without rubber.  Prop is a 7 x 9.1 x 1.125" wide formed wood prop. 

I will be flying this in Pontiac this week at a Cloudbusters indoor contest.  Hoping for long flight times!!!

Here is a trim flight video of the Geo Embrysol.  Got it stuck on a wall during initial trimming and lost about an hour of time trying to get it down.  Got close but unable to get it dialed in for official flights.

Archie, what is your opinion of the balsa props over using a plastic one, even if the plastic was modified?

I prefer wood props.  I have made some 3D printed prop presses that form 1 piece flat sheets into props.  Less carving.  I can be then tailor pitch and area distribution where I want it. 

I have had lots of success with plastic props.  I do scrape them thinner and make sure they are balanced and pitched symmetrically.  I usually also bush the center with aluminum tubing to sure up the tracking and reduce excess play.

Thanks for your point of view on props, there is a prop type for every occasion. I have been making 5.5 in props with 7 layers of 1/16th by 1/4 in wide. fan out to the proper pitch radius and then carpenter glue them together. When hard, carve much the same as flat sheet prop blanks.

Stack wood props are very nice.  I have made a few.  They are very stiff.  My formed wood props use a bit less wood, but to each their own.

After careful consideration, going to build a new rudder and make it go to the right.  So light and fighting torque is just an effort in futility.  Easy fix. 

I really like how this model cruises.  If I can get the takeoff and transition fixed, might have something.

Got 2 maxes yesterday out of 3 flights.  Hit ceiling on 2nd flight dismounting the wing for an indoor DT, but that's why you fly right?

Hi Archie - nice model and great flights. I've just built my first Embryo and when I installed the plastic prop it now balances about 1mm behind the L.E. - which I think says nose heavy in anyone's language! I might try a carved unit or sheet prop. Thanks for posting the videos. Tim

Ya, that is nose heavy.  Mine balances @ 2.25" behind LE on 3in chord.  I use formed wood props using my 3d printed prop press.  Light weight and true pitch.

This design just keeps making me smile.  Posted 3 2 min maxes at the November Cloudbusters contest and it made it look easy.  Longest flight was 2:45.  There is more in the tank.

Currently using 7 x 9.1 x 1.125 wide performed prop out of my 3d printed presses.  I use a 30in loop of 094 rubber wound to 0.55inoz.  @ 0.6inoz I hit the girders.  My feeling is that I need more prop.  I have a 7 x 9.8 cooking at the same width with slightly more undercamber.  Hoping it will allow for more torque so I can put in more winds.  I have tried a 30in loop of 080 rubber, but it only climbed up half way and ran out of steam. 

I have flown this model over 3 min in the Pontiac soccer complex.  I think that 4 min is there, but need to match the prop and rubber.  The fun of indoor!!
