Title: 24" Span Hurrican (Hummingbird Kit)
Post by: Don McLellan on May 13, 2022, 09:14:14 PM
Received Bernard's Hurrican kit a couple of weeks ago, and decided to build it.  The kit I purchased comes with laser cut wood, printed tissue, etc.  The wood is very, very nice and this is some of the kit printed tissue.

The laser cut parts fit perfectly, and did I mention the wood is very nice.  The last pic is of the mostly assembled fuse.

Thanks for posting the printed tissue pictures!  My home printer does not like printing tissue and neither do I.  Having the option to buy it seems like a really nice feature.  I'll remember hummingbird airplanes when I look for my next build project.  I look forward to your Hurricane coming together.

Hmmmm…….. nice!  I rather think I would need a few spare sheets of the printed tissue as I doubt I would be successful on one attempt throughout!

Thank you Joe, Dave.  Weight of fuse prior to sanding.

Interesting kit. Especially the already printed paper or fabric is impressive. This also makes the model nice and light. Will continue to follow the thread excited.
Have fun with the further construction. :)

Thanks Zip and Bernard.  Have constructed the wing, but will add some diagonal stiffening.  (Not sure it needs it; it's just me).

Nice looking set of bones Don.  Your usual great craftsmanship.  Looks like a very nice kit!  I agree with the fellas, preprinted tissue :o
I've never been able to successfully print my tissue for a whole fuselage or wings.  I shall enjoy following this build!

Thanks Tom.  Not much more to report other than I did add some diagonals to the wing which made the wing much more stiffer in torsion.  The stiffeners are 1/32" thick.

I think I would be inclined to add stiffeners  - they should additionally result in the tissue covering being unlikely to sag so much  in my case!

Agree David.  The stiffeners make quite a torsional difference.  Haven't done much in the last while, but did chalk the backside of the tissue today.  Probably install some tissue tomorrow.

Wet covered the tail feathers today.  Interesting that there is minimal (coloured) tissue remaining once the piece is covered (second pic).

Your work on the balsa parts was top notch but the pre-printed tissue is so unusual (at least to me) that it's hard not to focus on it.  The shading between the notional ribs is really a nice touch.  I'm interested in your chalking process.  Was that recommended in the kit or your idea to add opacity?  That's going to be a great looking plane.

looks great Don. Regarding the printed tissue extra outline - Well there is no need for more than you need and pigment is damned expensive ... I purchased a double set of carriages today and the total was over $400.

Thank you for the kind comments Joe, Paul, Bernard.

Agree Joe that it is very unusual for a kit to include printed tissue.  And have to say, the detail on the tissue is excellent.  A tonne of work has gone into the artwork for this tissue; a real tribute to Bernard.

Did't get a lot done today, just started to fit the canopy.

Finally finished covering the wing.  Now on to the fuse.

Some minor progress covering the fuse.  (Summer is getting in the way of airplane building).

Wow!  I had to go back to some of your earlier pictures of the bare fuselage to look at the actual stringers versus which were part of the tissue art – amazing!  Of course, you surely did your part with very tidy tissue application.  This is a very attractively built model.

Can’t see any wrinkles.  So a commendable effort.

Thanks Joe, Mike, David.  A little more progress.  I've given up trying to remove wrinkles and just press on.  I might take a swing at a three blade prop for this guy.
