I would like to try and in large a standard flying clown and see if it will fly better , the standard clown has a 28" wing and is great for a.15 size engine . this new clown has a 35.5" wing and use a VECO .19 BB for power. I will post photos as I go.

This is a photo of the work I have completed so far , the controls and lead outs are in place. The next item will be the weight box placed in the outboard wing, and then install the motor mounts and landing gear. I hope to get this completed and posted Friday.

Hi Bob,

That looks like it will be fine, the stab is not too small and not too big so I think you will be pleased with it. It's got a pretty big wing and with that Veco .19BB it will be fine and probably move out good. The tail length is pretty short so your corners will be sharp so watch it with an aft CG as the corners will be too sharp and the drag in the hard pitches will be significant with that low aspect ratio wing, might get a slight bit of stall in hard corners so make sure you got the proper tip weight on. Just slightly more tip weight than the weight of the lines. Ensure you got a bit of line rake and if possible an adjustable lead-out guide would be super for your extra trim. Anyway the usual features for control line flying for trims and you will have fun with it. It will be nice all dressed up with some color.

HI Sundance12,

I liked the flying clown and have had a lot of clowns, the first one had a McCOY .19 on it. the new one is a 120% larger than the old kit fling clown.

HI All,

The flying clown is coming along as planed , the landing gear is fitted the weight box is in place,and the motor mounts installed the plywood and the rudder is cut out.

G'day Robert,

That's looking good. I'll be interested to hear how she goes. What length lines will you use?

My personal preference is for as much wing as I can get. My 15 size models tend to be around a metre span, and I can build to around 450g.

I feel that lightly loaded models fly a lot better for me on 52'3" lines.

Sorry about mixing metric and imperial.

HI All,

I have 2 coats of sanding sealer and sanding the complete model, the next step is to cover the wing with silkspan and clear dope the model[6]coats of clear. The model is now glued together and holes for the engine are drilled, the controls are installed and working great.

The fling clown is very close now, I sent in a photo today of the regular size clown and the larger one. the wing is covered, with one coat of clear dope and only 5 more to go.

I am at the point now to be painting clear dope on the model, but the weather [Humidity] is just to high 75%. I will get back on it when it comes down.

It looks like the end is in sight for the Flying Clown, the Veco BB .19 has been fitted, the tank location is drilled and some more dope on it and it will be in the air.

Well, you're a faster builder than I am. I built one myself about 6 months ago and I'm slower than molasses in January! All I can say is yours looks great! One of these days I'll get a digital camera so I can post pictures too. About the only thing I don't like about retirement is the pay rate! LOL! Well, I don't like being old either! LOL!

I think I could have completed the clown to day but my best friend said it was time to yard work and I did, but I did get some time to work on the clown.

Well the flying clown was flying today out at Fentress Field, I put it up for two flight's and I think it is going to be a very good plane. I will try to get some more time with it.

I distinctly remember the Flying Clown that I built in '67! Did it up real fancy in metallic blue AeroGloss and ORANGE (OUCH) Monocote. Flew it at Flushing Meadow till I went into the AF in '69. It must have been a Super Clown 'cause I had a .35 in it (?)((I THINK)) Undecided

Nice job on the Flying Clown.  I used to have many good times with the Flying Clown in the early 60's.  I had several of them as they were the least expensive kits you could buy at the time, and I could usually scrape up enough money from doing chores to buy one.  I used to stick an old Mccoy 35 Red Head on the front end of them and hang on.  Seeing yours sure brings back some great memories and makes me want to build another, but I'll definitely use a smaller engine as I don't turn around near as fast as I used to 50 years ago. I have several old Mccoy 19s laying around that would work well at my altitude (4,300' ASL).

Of all of PDQ's offerings, I liked the Circus King best. It matched up perfectly with the Fox 35.
