OSPREY GLIDER 20" HIGH START TOWLINE FLIGHT REPORT N0 1 2024 FEB 21 2024 Page 1 of 4
I snapped awake to the beautifully lit predawn sky, and I ran for the camera - there is really only a short window to get the full color pic. Here are four pics spanning from right to left. Blanket Wave Cirrus Stratus?
Pic #1 2368 MED pre dawn sky Pic #2 2369 MED pre dawn sky Pic #3 2370 MED pre dawn sky Pic #4 2371 MED pre dawn sky
Pic #5 2388 MED Flight Morning walk-around in the Hangar.
The forecast was looking way too windy, so I thought I would try flying first thing in the morning when the wind was at its lowest speed.
8:07 AM 34 deg F (feels like 25 deg F), Winds blowing from the South at 11 mph gusting to 16 mph. There was not really any frost on the grass, and the ground was thawing out quick, to soft lumpy sod. Even though the grass was short, it was a soft cushion to crash your plane on ...

OSPREY GLIDER 20" HIGH START TOWLINE FLIGHT REPORT N0 1 2024 FEB 21 2024 Page 2 of 4 cont
Pic #7 2386 Snip Wind on the flag at the Spitfire and Hurricane.
It was cold and windy and dreary on the open Cricket Field. I had to stick my hands in my pockets between flights. I got 6 flights and 22 pics.
Today's flights were climbing way too fast, and it seemed to be releasing off of the tow line hook too early, before reaching the directly overhead flight apex, and then release at the apex, while still on the tow line. But it was releasing the plane straight into the incoming wind, with no "kiting" of the glider, left or right, into the ground, and cartwheeling.
Pic # 8 2384 MED Tow line is 23 feet of braided white cord string ( a key ring is used for sliding off of the fuse tow hook), and the other end is attached to 7 feet of 3/32 inch rubber (the loop tied into the other end of the rubber, gets staked out into the ground)
Pic #9 2372 MED Here we are on the Cricket Field looking South - wind from the South.
Pic #10 2373 MED Looking SouthSouthEast.
Pic #11 2375 MED Same as above.
The object of today's flights, was to keep the Glider inside the Cricket Field, as there are a lot of full size kite eating trees lining the perimeter.

SIX HIGH START TOWLINE FLIGHTS
Pic #12 Flight #1 2376 MED Perfect straight out tow launch into big wind. It came off of the tow hook perfectly. The flight had a couple of dipsy doodles. 5 seconds
Pic #13 Flight #2 2377 SNIP I added a bit more down on the stabilizer elevator tabs. The wind is coming from the left. It rose straight up on the tow line, with a big wing-over loop, right on top over me, and headed straight to where it is on the pic - sitting in the middle just above the horizon, and pointing left (south). This all blew directly West from my launch spot ie no net penetration south into the wind. It came down to a perfect landing into the wind, but getting near the tree line. 5 seconds
Pic #14 Flight #3 2378 MED It went up to the right a little on the line, came off the hook and came down in a BIG missile dive, but RECOVERS just in the nick of time. 4 seconds
Pic #15 Flight #4 2379 SNIP The flight shoots off to the left, into a perfect flight into the wind, to a perfect landing. In the pic, the right evergreen tree, one third up the trunk, just to the right, on landing final glide. 6 seconds

Pic #17 Flight #6 2381 SNIP It rose straight up way too high, stalled, and came down with a big downward forward swoop, and just missed the ground. In the pic it is just about to land in the grass just to the right of the end of the pitch. 5 seconds
END OF SIX FLIGHTS
Pic #18 2382 MED It's cold - time to go home. 15 min walk one way home
Pic #19 2385 MED A nice straight on pic with the Spitfire and Hurricane in the rear, and three scorched Dawn Redwood trees on the left.
Pic #20 2389 MED Home safe and sound - arrive at 8:50 AM
Well ... not the greatest flight report, but a lot of exciting dives !! It is really just a hope and a prayer, when I let go of the tailplane on the launch. LOL It's a good feeling, though, to get out there and experiment with this thing we call "Theory of Flight". Especially good when coming home with the model - as opposed to leaving it in a tree - and good coming home with no damage ! I did really smash it up badly in a tree a few years ago - hence the new rear end ... Now ... lots to think about - how do I fix the big stall and dive ?? Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. First I must get it on the balance pin coffee jars.
Get out and fly

OSPREY GLIDER 20" HIGH START TOWLINE pg 1 of 2 FLIGHT REPORT N0 2 2024 FRI FEB 23 2024
FEB 25 2024
Well, after that first Osprey Glider Flight session this year, on Feb 21 where the glider was porpoising a lot, I did check the balance when I got home - I had thought those few test glides that appeared good, were indeed good, so I thought I would just go out and fly without really checking the balance. Well, it WAS out of balance - another amateur move on my part ... So Mandrake and Bloodroot added clay weight to the nose to get the balance right.
Pic #1 2393 Mandrake and Bloodroot set up the glider on the balance pins.
OSPREY GLIDER 20" HIGH START TOWLINE FLIGHT REPORT N0 2 2024 FRI FEB 23 2024
The weather was a lot warmer that the last one Feb 21 2024. 50 deg F (feels like 46) winds blowing 16 mph from the North East, gusting to 22 mph 49% humidity.
We got to the field at 3:50 PM.
Pic #2 2395 Wind on the flags of Jackson Park
The weight that was added to the top of the nose, really worked. I got some good pics of the few flights. Of course it needed that extra weight to balance it -- because of the new larger tailplane, that taken from an old worn out stick fuse, pylon mounted, high wing Flyboy, that was not fixable anymore.
Pic #3 2396 First flight heading straight out just left of the tall spruce. I got several nice flights, but the last three flights all "kited in" to the right, and ended up breaking a cross member ledge on the fuse, that raised the trailing edge of the wing, about 1/32" or so.
Pic #4 2397 Landed far side of the Pitch.

OSPREY GLIDER 20" HIGH START TOWLINE pg 2 of 2 FLIGHT REPORT N0 2 2024 FRI FEB 23 2024 Feb 25 2024 The best flight was about 8 seconds. This one did a full circle like it was on a on a predetermined route, just as if it was a rubber powered plane. It flew out high, released to the right and fought the wind, tuned further sideways, then curving started down wind and picking up speed, coming back even with me, then continued downwind gaining more speed, still turning right because of the rudder tab offset, and finished off flying low about 4 feet off the ground, with speed, for a long ways, back towards me, just down wind, and curls right in in front of me, back into the wind, and does a perfect slow soft landing, right in front of me, and the kite flyers. A-HAAA !! This was one of the best flights. Pic #7 2400 High flight Pic #8 2401 Another great flight Pic #9 2402 Lining up the launch. Pic #10 2403 Osprey glider going to the right and down over the couple flying their kite. Pic #11 2404 Soft landing longest circle. But, the next, and last three, flights, of this day, were all to end in crash landings, kiting in to the right. Then I got a bunch of nice kite flying pics. That kite flew so well, all you had to do was pull on the single string and up it went !! Plus, he mastered it, floating it all over, and running with it ... Lastwoodsman Richard cont.

OSPREY GLIDER REPAIR AFTER 3 KITE INS FLIGHT SESSION #2 FEB 23 2024
Wed Feb 28 2023
BROKEN RAISED CROSSMEMBER LEDGE REPAIR - ( for making the wing trailing edge to sit a little higher )
I had broken the crossmember ledge that was glued on the top of the fuse, where it lifts the rear of the wing about one millimeter. This was after only six flights on Flight Report #2 Fri Feb 23 2024.
Here is the easy repair.
Pic #1 2420 SNIP MED SMALL A long strip on top and a shorter strip on the bottom (piece is broken off) make up this crossmember.
Pic #2 2421 MED Mandrake glues new balsa strips together and clamps them up with clothespins. Bloodroot uses scotch tape to tape up big tissue tears in the fuse rear from a "bad" launch (fingers somehow got in the way).
Pic #3 2422 SNIP SMALL M & B glue the crossmember strip to the fuse.
Pic #4 2438 MED Here you can see how much that little cross member raised the rear of the wing.
Pic #5 2435 MED Ready To Fly !! This repair was made just in time for Flight Report #3 - perfect weather on Mon Feb 26 2024, where it flew wonderfully and got its record 17 sec flight, from 17 high start tow line launches.

OSPREY GLIDER 20" HIGH START TOWLINE FLIGHT REPORT N0 3 2024 MON FEB 26 2024
Wed Feb 28 2024
It turned out to be a stellar day on the Cricket Field of Jackson Park, Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
Pic #1 WEATHER FORECAST MON FEB 26 2024 This was the weather forecast for the morning, and it wasn't far off, except it got clouded over with a thin layer of puffy ball orange peel cumulonimbus cloud clouds.
FLIGHT MORNING
Pic #2 2436 MED The Osprey Glider, 20", on the board, patiently waiting ...
Pic #3 2437 MED Mandrake and Bloodroot perform the Pre flight inspection and gather 3 Towlines, and a bag of spare wing tie down elastics. The Tow Lines are #1 - 23 feet string cord and seven feet of 3/32" 0.094" single strand rubber, #2 - 23 feet of string and seven feet of 1/16" 0.063" single strand of rubber, #3 - 23 feet of string and seven feet of 0.045" single strand rubber. We only ended up using just the 3/32" rubber launch cord. You can also see the extra gray clay weight added to the top of the nose.
Pic #4 2440 MED Wind on the flag (it was stuck from fully unfurling) at the Spitfire and Hurricane replica site, on the walk out to the Cricket Field. When I left the apartment at 11:07 AM, it was 41 deg F (feels like 34) with winds blowing from the East at 12 mph gusting to 19 mph , and low humidity - forgot to write it down ...
Pic #5 2441 MED I arrived at the field at 11:30 AM, and I walked all around the whole field, picking out a lot of field perimeter sticks (branch twigs) that were sticking high, a couple of feet out of the ground, and then I gave that construction cone a boot, and look what was underneath it. But the grass and ground was really soft and fluffy.

17 FLIGHTS 18 field pics 2442 to 2459, also 2461 and 2462 leaving the park.
I got 15 flying pics and a couple were hard to pick the plane out of. I tried different positions of the tow line peg, and adjusted the directions of the launch. The wind was pretty steady from the East and gradually moving to the North East, but it was changing directions a little bit too - enough to make me throw up some grass into the air before launches.

Wed Feb 28 2024
The first flight (no pic) went up too high and stalled with a big dive and just missed impaling itself on my "sort of", split firewood stake. But after that, I hit the right launch direction, and the second flight pic 2442 was a nice launch and I got 8 sec on a perfect flight, turning right after tow line release, and gliding in a right hand circle. This is how the rest of the flights basically went - launch pointing due East towards the old Band Stand building, it goes high into the wind, comes off the hook so nicely, and continues into its long right hand turn, to down wind, and then crosswind, to landing.

I got good at these launches, and started pulling the rubber back further, and also repositioning the stake, as I was now starting to use the whole park almost, to get the glider down before reaching the tree line. This Cricket Field is 110 yards by 130 yards, slightly oval. The times for the third flight and onwards were 11 sec, 12, 6, 8, 4, 11, 12, 14, 10, 17, 8, 12, and the 17th flight it kited into the ground right. No damage, so I called it a day.

OSPREY GLIDER 20" HIGH START TOWLINE FLIGHT REPORT N0 3 2024 MON FEB 26 2024 March 1 2024 Thanks for the replies guys. Hello John. And hello to all of you other faceless names out there in Internut Land. Yes, John, I had to put my best buddy "Trapper" (yellow lab) down, one year and nine months ago, on May 14 2022. Plus I had surgery myself, four months after that. We both could barely walk. He was eleven and three quarter years old. So that is three pet dogs in the last 20 years. I have spent all of my emotion and energy on dogs, and I am now not healthy enough to be rolling around on the ground with a new pup, or even running around with a new pup. I had the joy of three puppies, and that is more than my fair share. Trapper did actually accompany me on all of those flights of every model plane that I ever flew in Jackson Park (plus three walks every day). It is not the same without him. Pic #1 2774 med Trapper and Air Camper and Stooge Pic #2 8512 custom Trapper me and trimmed out Rearwin Speedster Pic #3 8534 med Trapper in the Flower Garden of Jackson Park Pic #4 4602 custom Trapper and Bluebird Ornithopter Pic #5 4901 med Trapper Cabinaire Stooge and me Pic #6 6299 med Trapper in Jackson Park I do hope that the Hip Pocket Site History comes back - I am sure it will eventually. Hi Richard,
Nice to see you flying again.
I am so sorry to hear about Trapper. We lost our beloved dog of many years about 18 months ago, my wife and I have never been without a dog in nearly 30 years of marriage, our kids have known nothing else so it left a hole.
This little chap filled that hole quite nicely. Even though we have had a number of dogs that lived to ripe old ages, we have never had a puppy, all have been rescue dogs or dogs that have been “orphaned” when their owner has passed. Two have been 5 years plus, so the puppy stage has long gone and no house training to do! The point being that if where you are in Canada is anything like the UK there are plenty of mature dogs who need a new home, perhaps worth a look?

Hi Andrew. It is so good that people do adopt the old rescue dogs. I know all of the dog walkers in the park, and it is surprising how many of them are rescue dogs, and repeat rescue dog rescuers. And the temporary asylum sponsors for dogs - what is the word FOSTER ? They are all encouraging me to get a rescue also, and referring me to the websites. One other elderly couple adopted a rescue Greyhound racer. He said it is costing him an average of $15 per day with medical bills alone. It is getting more expensive all of the time. I am on limited pension, and since I don't drive anymore ( I just take a taxi or bus ), I find that I have just enough money to retire sort of comfortably. So, I am still thinking about a dog. I only lasted one day after each of my first two dogs died, before getting another one - I know what that is like too. And I do watch a lot of videos with dogs like canoe camping, van life people, new puppy compilations LOL etc all kinds of stuff. I also would not want to "orphan" a dog if I adapted one too - I actually had thought about that ... So, we will see how it goes in the next few months. If you never had a pup, the puppies are probably somewhat similar to baby humans LOL They are pretty funny together in the videos. Thanks for your kind words.
Lastwoodsman Richard
PS Your new dog looks sweet.

Sweet in looks but a bit of a rogue…
He is a Patterdale. They are …ahem…. wilful little dogs. We always wanted one, and were very lucky to get him as a rescue.
Take care.

Guys the hippocket forum gets better every day now that Ratz is firmly behind the controls, AND finally we have the beloved LASTWOODSMAN back at the keyboard and out on the field! Welcome back Richard, and I am sure all your past worldly pets have left notice at St. Peter's desk to be on the watch for a guy with a neatly trimmed beard and a backwards hat!

Sad news Richard . i can understand your position - having lost companion dogs and cats.
It's great to have you posting your flight reports again though.
Cheers

MONDAY MARCH 25 2024
There is a flying day in the forecast, for the Osprey Glider 20". The tow hook is in the perfect position and shape, as called out on the plan, and it is ready to fly. I gotta get out there like the Glider men of Port Meadow. Friday March 29 2024 is the day - kids are in school, and the Cricket players are there on the field, all day Saturday and Sunday, and from 4 or 5 PM til dark, every day now. So I better get out there when the opportunity arises.
It is really a lot of fun, just pulling back the rubber and letting it go, way easier than stretch winding a rubber powered model on a winding stooge ... and easier to re-peg the stake into safer spots, as the wind changes, etc.
