I finally decided on this winters project. The '1/8A LaStick'. Designed by Dave Fritzke & Gene Rock, based on a Fred Reese design. I'll be converting it from Cox .020 power to electric. I'm trying to keep the modifications to a minimum. There will be a few. Pictures aren't working for me now, I'll get them up soon.

Ribs and wing structure going together. First modification is taking out the dihedral.

Second modification, I changed the leading edge from 1/8th square to 3/16 x 1/4.

What do you use for a flat surface? It appears you get very strong pin retention. Thanks

Hi Plane, thanks for checking out my build. This particular building board is made from a piece of 3/4" white pine shelving that I checked for flatness with my aluminum yard stick. Then I glued a piece of 1/2" drywall to it. Drywall is my preferred building surface. It works great.

Thanks Carpet, this is the smallest R/C model I have ever built. I've built rubber free flight larger than this one. I was looking for something quick, easy and economical. My model building time and budget is limited. If it fly's well I may use it for a base for an original design I have bouncing around in my head.

Third modification, added center section vertical webbing on the rear of the spar. Fourth modification, added leading edge blocking for leading edge wing screw. Fifth modification, lengthened each wing tip 5/8th of an inch to increase the wing span 1 1/4 inches.
I'm also showing how I use masking tape to protect the ribs while sanding the leading and trailing edges to shape.

Hi Steve, that's a great idea with the masking tape, It looks like you are using a "grit stick" ( my Name for it) to sand it with, I have one that I bought many years ago and would love to get a couple more, any chance you know where they are available. regards Dave

I am a relatively new builder, even though "long of tooth" and you are giving me some nice tips and tricks in this build. Thanks for pics and keep them coming.

Much thanks guys for your input, interest and compliments. I need to remember to try to include tips and tricks on my build threads. I'm no master modeler by any means, but I have been building models for a little over forty years.
I thought I would be further along than I am today. I did detail wood work to the center section and wing tips, I also made and hinged the ailerons. In the picture you can see I cut one CA type hinge into three smaller hinges. I cut the corners at a forty five degree angle to make them easy to insert. Also, tip for the day; dollar store fingernail files make great sanding tools for small models.
I increased the chord of the ailerons from 5/8th inch to 13/16th of an inch. At this point I'm going to stop counting the modifications I do to this design. At the beginning of this thread I said I would keep the modifications to a minimum. I think I'm the type of guy that starts out folding a paper airplane, and ends up trying to build a 747. IT"S FUN!

I got ahead of myself. Pictures for today. The hinging tools shown were not used on this model. I guess they work well for larger models, but I used my eye and a number eleven exacto knife for these hinges. It worked better for me.

I also use the building aid pictured in the pint glass . When I'm thinking of what to tackle next, it comes in handy.

working on aileron linkages. I'm using printer paper and Titebond glue to reinforce the center section and aileron linkage areas. .

This is my second model to use Solar Film Lite. I really like this stuff. It really likes to stick to itself and takes getting used too. I like the low heat and it conforms to small radius well. I went ahead and covered the wing before starting the fuselage. My thinking is to break up the tedious covering so I'm not covering the whole model at one time.

More progress on fuselage. Modifications made are........
Moved firewall forward 1/2" to account for shorter electric motor. Moved bulkhead at trailing edge of wing aft 5/16" to account for increased wing chord. Moved tail post aft 1 1/2" to account for slight increase in stabilizer area. Added triangle stock to account for, I like rounded corners. Converted from nose dragger to tail dragger.
Funny thing, the other day I stopped at Hobby Lobby to see if their limited balsa supply included triangle stock. I was happy to find that they had the 3/8" stock that I was looking for. Yesterday I tried to cut a piece to fit, only to find that there was no right angle on the stock! I've never seen triangle stock that was not a right angle. I'm saving it in case I build a model with triangular bulkheads! I had to make the drive across town to Hobby Town to get the right stock. Good hobby shops are getting rare. SAD!

Sheeted and rough shaped the fuselage, and built stabilizers. Both stabilizers were enlarged slightly and changed from solid 1/16" sheet to framed up 1/8" sticks. Came up with a neat way to make a round vertical stabilizer. It came out very strong. I'll cover it as shown in the picture with no added structure.

I wish I had more time to build models! Installed servo rails, push rod tubes and tail wheel. Mocked up landing gear from 1/16" welding rod. Installed motor.
