Downloaded the old Berkeley plan of the 36" Fairchild 24 from our own Hippocket plans, plugged in a flash and took flash to my printing firm. Plan was printed in 2 copies, one to cut up, the other to keep for 'next time'... Got home, unrolled the plan(s) and was astonished...the 36 3/8" span plan was somehow 'shrunk' to a 24 1/4" span! I'll use this size, (nice plan, by Bill Effinger) But I have the kit, and no right size plan... That's what I did yesterday...

Bummer, C/L Gee Bee. I checked my downloaded plan file, and opened the "Measurement" tool to verify the span and it appears to be correct. Your printing outfit must not have set the print output to 100%?

Egg-zactly, Indoor...I called the owner, and she said her counter person ('Desiree') had mentioned 24" X 36", a misunderstanding as I had asked about "a 36" span"... The owner apologized profusely, and offered two the right size for gratis. I told her I'd use the smaller plan for an additional build, win-win!
I'm delighted to be building again...with help from you wonderful guys in my 'hip pocket'!

Have been fooling around with a peanut scale, rubber powered, ducted fan Skyray. I've cut out the parts using my craft cutter using wood that is quite heavy 1/32 balsa. The interior and exterior balsa longerons are not installed. Interior 1/32 sq longerons would form the tunnel (when tissued) for the air from the intakes to the fans, and 1/16 sq longerons would form the outline of the model. The weight as shown in the pic is 14 grms, using about 15 lb balsa for everything. I have some contest balsa (4 to 6 lb) on order, so may rebuild the rear of the model at a later date.

Very impressive Don. Are the impellers 3D printed?

Hi John,
No. The impellers are all balsa. Heavy balsa with lots of glue. I soaked the blades in dilute white glue, then shaped them (with a tonne of elastic) on a two litre pop (soda) bottle. Pic showing the imbellers and the 'sorta' bearing between.

Had our flying display in the Unley Library tonight following on from the static display reported in reply 1897. We didn't know what to expect so I made up a few boards showing how Hangar Rats were built and made up some kits for sale, had 6 Rats on hand for people to try out along with 3 Wacky Witches and a few kits. Tim (THB) had an F1D that amazed everybody with its long slow flights, Tim had it trimmed perfectly for the small hall and most just could not believe it. The Hall is over 100 years old and has had many guises including a Dance Hall and a Picture Theater , also '60's Rock legend Johnny O'Keefe performed there. In the end we had 47 people over the 2 hours and sold a few kits, so there was some interest, mostly young families with kids around 4 - 8 years old. The younger kids were really too young to fly Hanger rats but seemed to get on OK with the more sturdy Witch. the Library is keen to have us back next year so I think a more sturdy model will be in order. I didn't get much time for Photos but here's some of the display and Tim's F1D

Good idea. Any way to get the hobby out into the eye of the public is helpful, especially seeing them fly. Thumbs up! ian

Dave did a great job preparing the 'how to build a hangar rat' boards and making kits for sale. As well as building a half dozen Rats etc for people to fly. The Putterill family came out in force with Lyn, Di and Tyson on board lending a hand. We were all so flat out helping people wind and fly the planes that none of us got round to taking pics of the action! Kids and parents loved it, and the Council events organiser was impressed (she had flown a Hangar Rat as a kid - so was a big supporter). The F1D was just a novelty act to distract people while the battle damaged Rats got some quick repairs. Great fun - thanks for organising. Tim

It sounds like a great mob to be with Tim. It's so rare to see spectators enjoying modelling like that. Again good on you all.
Cheers, John

My wife kindly bought me this ARTF as an early Christmas present. I have a spare Telco or maybe a reaction motor would be better ?

A Telco won’t work- try a Telfco instead.

If you were to use a reaction motor it would have to be a D-H (R-R)Gnome.
