Finally got around to repairing the back of the Swallow's cockpit properly. It having flown with a patched up bulkhead all last summer ater a couple or rather hard arrivals did for it.

Hi All, I just completed the test build for my new Hawker Hurricane 24" kit based on the Comet dimescale design. The kit went together well and I have made some small adjustments to the design to make it build slightly better. The tissue required some modifications to get it just right but now it works pretty well.
The model is built using mostly 3/32 balsa. Most of the wood is supplied precut to length (even stab and fin spars as well as fuselage components). The only thing I needed to add was the main wing spars and leading edges as well as side stringers. The canopy is formed from flat plastic sheet. The tissue art is modelled on the mount of Sqn. Ldr. Robert Stanford Tuck, the greatest British Ace of the Battle of Britain (25 victories in his Hurricane Mk1). The prop in this case is a Gizmo Geezer 9.5" unit. I had to turn a hole in the spinner tip to ensure that it would free wheel properly.
Anyway there you have it ... flight testing next

David I did not do a build thread on the Hurricane (it is a very simple design). The plan is now available on my website along with digital download options for the tissue files etc.

I saw the Hurricane on Facebook too, Bernard ... very nice Speaking of dimes, I allowed myself a bit of time for aeromodelling at work today ... I thought my dime model deserved a pilot. Another project, another pilot ... I need more aircraft for them to fly! (I have at least 4 pilot's waiting to scramble!)

Nice work on that pilot Russ. What's he made of? BG can we please see a closeup and explanation up of the way you have the spinner modified for a geezer unit? I have to do a similar thing for my Spitfire P-30. I can't have a Spitfire without a proper spinner... BTW great looking Hurricane! I have some pretty good print files in AI also, but never did a Hurricane.

Hi Crabby ... meant to say that it is one of Dave Banks' magnificent pilots ... I've just painted it. They are moulded using expanding PU foam.

The Auckland MAC was invited to provide a display at the local Warbirds open day at Ardmore yesterday. We were blessed with a bright and crisp day. A high level of interest was shown by all age groups with exemplary behaviour by all the children and no damaged models. Noise was provided by Charles Warren running an MP jet and Don Spray demonstrated kit building using a VMC Bird Dog. All in all a good exercise that gives us some visibility. Photos of the display and a BE2, Bristol Scout and a PBY 5. Ricky

Had a close call with the DLG today. 3 or 4 dogs were disputing dominance, and one backed into it. Fortunately did not step on it. Somehow, dog slobber got on the bottom of the wing, but other than that I don't think there was any damage.

Crabby, I laminated the spinners discs together and then glued in an axel for turning on a cordless drill. I made sure that the axel was only glued to the first few laminations and not at the tip where I would be turning the hole for the drive dog.
Then I turned the spinner as per usual practice. Using a sharp blade I carefully turned the hole in the tip. I then removed the axel and hollowed the spinner (in this case I precut the lamination discs so that removing the spinner core is easy). Finally to tweak the fit I used a pointy sanding drum mounted on my drill to open up the hole in the tip to ensure that it cleared the drive dog.

computer work. first i recovered electronically the 4 books i wrote back in the early 2000's ---- modelling the rare curtiss fighters, thunder and lightning, weird airplanes and laying out the drawing. i still have to scan plans. i can do that later as i have hard copies of them. YIPPEE KI YI EH MO FO!!!!! I THOUGHT THEY WaERE LOST AS THE WORD PROGRAM WAS TOO OLD. i am now reviewing dwgs in tiff format i believe these plans or most of them are available on line so we shall see if i offer the disks to RATZ i have two disks from NASM of ww2 fighters i will offer these to RATZ once i have down loaded them . jim

Been tinkering off and on with a new adjustable noseblock for No. 5.
The new block gives about 5 degrees max for both down and right thrust which should let me sort out the not quite right thrustline of the current block but it runs out about 1.23g heavier* than the current block, so there's a good chance even with the current trimming ballast stripped it'll be too heavy. We shall see. If it does then No. 5 will get its 4th block when I've got good values for thrust line.
Probably be a good idea to have a bead as a thrust bearing because at max. downthrust (5.5o) there's precious little clearance between the prop and the cowl.
Pics. Right thrust, down thrust, metalwork and the ugly great wedges on the current block.
*Will lose a little weight when the prop shaft is trimmed and when the cowl is shaped, but not a gramme's worth.

Shave the prop (unless this is for a P30!!) You can easily take a couple of gram off

As I've already balanced the prop I thought I'd file* off the unnecessary sections of the metal backing plate. Probably didn't need to, see below, but I feel happier knowing that I've got rid of a bit of dead weight. A few figures to conjure with. Current block ................................6.40g New block (untrimmed prop shaft)..............7.04g New block (trimmed - gash - shaft)............6.85g Trimming ballast..............................0.98g blu tack + >1g fixed Pb which can be pared down with a blade.
Leads me to think that the new block painted with a trimmed shaft will be ~7g which if I've done my sums right means I won't have to shave down the Pb and will get away with about 1/3g of blu tack. *An exchange A voice from upstairs, "Are you sanding in the room I've just cleaned?" Me, "No." AVFU, "It sounds like it. Are you getting dust everywhere?" Me, "No." It's so nice to be able to answer questions truthfully, if not quite completely, eh?
