Yesterday I posted a picture of my first effort at a Peanut sized spoked wheel (25mm) and promised pics of the gear I had to make first
1 is the finished item prior to paint.
2 - Vac-formed rim blank
3 - Rim mounted on dividing head (very simple but very effective)
4 - close-up of drilling operation

1 - Slice the end off the rim blank
2 - cut and sand the other end to complete the rim
3 - rim and hub mounted in spoking jig ready to be laced up

Just got back from a Bicester Scramble which I highly recommend - one the best Aircraft/car/petrolhead show type events I’ve ever been to . It’s a huge site at a WW2 airfield full of top end cars, bikes and aeroplanes. Fantastically eclectic and informal group of motoring and avaition enthusiasts - race cars to road cars they had it all, particularly if you like Porsches I think 1 in 5 was a Porsche and most of those were 911s but then who doesn’t love a nice 911
Also - Le Mans winning 1998 Silk Cut Jaguar, ex Schumaker Merc Group C car, Bentleys, Rileys, MGs, 4 DH Tiger Moths, 1 Thruxton Jackeroo, Issacs Fury, DH Leopard Moth, lots of Piper Cubs and variants, Cessna 120’s, Stearman, Piper Pawnee, so a pretty full day of looking in wonder
The Vintage Aircraft club had a fly in so some wonderful aircraft turned up and there were some in the hanger that caught the eye too. Piper Cub G-ASPS would make a lovely UK based subject for a scale model. The DH Leopard Moth was lovely too and a Thruxton Jackeroo!! Haven't seen one of those in awhile and I don't think I've actually seen an Issacs Fury before also there were 3 DH Tiger Moths
Highly recommend it as day out for petrolhead model aircraft enthusiast like me
I took my Lancia Fulvia owning neighbour in the Healey Sprite and he had a great time too. The drive up was rather raucous.. well every thing in the Sprite is a bit raucous, very loud, very peaky and very whiny straight cut gearbox … I absolutely love it

A quiet weekend for me so 'slightly' envious at what looks like a great day  . My eldest lad had already caused me envy by going to 'Race the Waves' at Bridlington ... hot rods on the beach! |

Yesterday I spent my day sanding, and using dope extensively, getting a Brodak Legacy a few hours closer to finished. Today it's laundry, cooking, slaughtering innocent blackberry vines, and other non-aviation related work.

Had a great Father's day! Re-trimmed and flew my.Baby Bombshell, which, a couple months back decided to land on the quiet country road next to our field and managed to get run over by the only car within sight! Also filmed my friend's beautiful Cardinal. And ran diesel, lots of Diesels! 3 Spitfire, 3 Merlins, 2 AM-10s, an AM-15, an AM-35 - what a beast, an ED Baby - so sweet, a side-port and a Reed-valve 049 from Redfin engines, a Kumar-150, an ED 146 - it's really loud as was advertised and maybe a couple more.
Just took a shower and lost the magic

This evening I flew my trusty old Jungmann model. https://youtu.be/Z0OOfg0h6-ISummer Solstice, so of course I donned my Druidic robes and daubed my face with woad before flight. TBH I had resurrected this model for flight a week or so ago - I needed something that could land on dirt and survive. The model had been gathering dust in a gloomy corner (pic 1 after dusting and de-cobwebbing) and needed a few repairs and a new motor. But the weather has been poor and only yesterday and today have offered good flying chances. Last time this model flew frequently, I had become used to a consistent flight time of 1 min 15 sec, so this flight of about 1 minute is below par - a bit more tweaking required. I think the end of the video and attached pic 2 show why I need models that can land on dirt - every five years or so the farmer grows maize on my flying field. This stuff grows so fast that in days - or a fortnight perhaps - flying will be out for me until the maize is harvested in September, and then the field will be dirt all winter. I still have my own little patch for experimentation. Stephen. |
