My good friend Jim Kuenz's Uncle Ralph will be coming down for the holidays.  We plan on visiting some local museums and taking him to our EAA chapter 280.  Ralph is the designer of the Klingon Battle Cruiser and is in the FAC hall of fame.  I thought it would be neat build his design before he gets here.

Luckily I had the whole weekend off.  I've been resting and building. I tried building two fuselage sides without using the stack method.  It didn't work and I ended up using the stack method and making three sides.  Ones a reject.  The wing outboard trailing edges require twisting to go from a under camber root, to a reflexed tip.  It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.  

This is a short kit from Volare Products. It's a quality kit.  It's my first time to build a laser cut kit, I usually build from scratch.  I like the well cut parts and plan to build more laser cut kits in the future.

Good way to relax Steve. I'm impressed with George's efforts with Volare and all these other coot age industry efforts.

I'm sorry to say that Ralph will not be making it down for the holidays due to health issues.
My thoughts and prayers will be with him.

Jim said that Ralph was using the thinned white glue method, so I thought I would try it out on the fuselage.
It works well enough and I'm probably not using the right technique.  I got impatient with the slow drying time and                       used a hair dryer on it.  It shrunk very tight a distorted the frame a bit.

I used nitrate dope and domestic tissue on the wing.  For some reason the top didn't shrink to well.
I'll give it another coat or two of dope tonight and see what happens.

I shrank the wing twice with straight water, and then gave it a few more coats of dope.  It's acceptable, but compared to Georges prototype it's embarrassing.
I have it nose down with seven glue coated BB's drying in the nose.  I used a Pitsco Education 7"  pusher prop cut down to 6".
This plane is not for beginners, if it fly's I'll have to change my shorts!

Test glide flew perfectly straight!  Needs a little more nose weight.

I ended up converting my Klingon Battle Cruiser to R/C.  I test flew it Sunday evening, it flew well and very stable.  It does need more control authority.  I may end up putting full flying elevon canards on it.
This is my first rubber to R/C conversion.  I think I like it.  Currently building a 1937 Speed Job at work during lunch.  I plan to convert it to R/C as well.

As you mention it is very stable - in pitch and roll(?) then I would try moving the CG back in small steps to try and improve the response. It may also be necessary to reduce the dihedral for faster roll control or add aileron control to the rear wing . The elevons on the canard look big enough so I would try the CG move first.

Thanks much for the input John.  I did think about putting control surfaces on the trailing edge of the main wing.  The canard wing actually has a longer wing span than the main wing.  I was also having trouble getting enough weight in the nose.
The battery and receiver are as far forward as I could get them and also has a few BB's glued into the nose cone.   I'm thinking of making some full flying elevon canards for it.
