I think that the 3 wires from the fan goes to a speed controller. The timer then plugs into the Futaba type connector on the speed controller.
I haven't played with the 18mm fan and can't find any specs on the internet, just keep things as light as possible.
Here's a picture

The unit has a brushless motor. The three wires go to a 'brushless motor speed controller' (aka a brushless ESC). The three wires can be connected in any order to the speed controller. Just plug it up and try it. If it goes 'backwards', swap any two wires over and it will go 'forwards'.

Been looking at all sorts of models for indoor with my 18 mm fan, current top contender is the AM Miles Student ( https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=2004) I've have blown the plans up and am looking at using depron formers and Davis Rees style wing construction to try and keep the weight down. Plenty of fuselage space to hold the battery and ESC/timer, and a nice short exhaust, just may need to deepen the intake duct a little. Mind you, like all project lists, it is subject to change (often)

Hi kiwi The miles looks a winner to me I've put my ducted fan project on the back burner for a bit but looking at the miles it has give me some encouragement Initially I brought a panther kit but I think it's more for outdoors Cheers

Hi Steve, Derek (of KP Aero) built the Student with the 24mm fan and says it flies very well outdoors but doubted the 18mm would be powerful enough, but mine will be strictly for indoors and I hope to lighten the structure considerably, hence the thought of depron (or reed) formers and Rees wing. Will also be cautious re balsa selection.Fingers crossed that it will be a flier I am fortunate in that I have weekly access to a sports centre which has space for 16 netball courts so sort of have the best of both worlds, outdoor space indoors! For my first attempt I wanted ample fuselage space and short straight inlet and exhaust ducting. I looked at the Heinkel He 162 on Mike Stuarts site but the Student has bigger wing area so should fly a bit slower so plumped for that, After the Student I will look at some of the Keilkraft models. (I like the Panther too and the Skyray).

Hi Nev Good luck with the build That sports hall is a monster your very lucky to have a site that big The average size here in the south of England is 4 courts so anything over 18" is a bit of a squeeze Cheers

Made a start today on the Student today and cut the 12 formers from foam meat tray, 1/8" thick, was most pleased when the twelve of them weighed in at only 7 grams. I will use balsa for the horizontal crutch. Steve, here is a photo of our site, the courts are divided by nets which can be slid back out of the way, it's just a matter of avoiding the uprights.
