REARWIN SPEEDSTER 30"  Dumas kit
FLIGHT REPORT #16                 SAT MAY 18 2019
cont from prev reply

Of course, the flights were too fast, as one would think when you use and extra third of rubber, more than the  four strand  3/16" rubber that gave me better, slower flights, where the rubber transitions better to running out the rubber more slowly, and preserving a forward aspect of the flight on landing -  as opposed to straight down almost.

Pic #1     2280     Going left.
Pic #2     2281     Out high going left.
Pic #3     2282     40 degree banking turn left.
Pic #4     2283     Ready to plummet at the end of the flight.
Pic #5     2284     Bad pic -  plummeting down on a 45 degree angle.
Pic #6     2285     Here is how it finishes high and then plummets down.

When we got back, the weather was at 2:25PM,  61 deg F (feels like 59 deg F), Winds blowing from the East at 8 mph, gusting to 12 mph, 77% humidity.   And there was no damage, thanks to the deep grass.

PS   All of this nice green space all the way to the Blue Indoor tennis court building, is two American baseball diamonds.    We are now losing all of this green space, because the City is using it to build a new Greenhouse because the old Greenhouse is falling apart.  Goodbye to the worm feeding grounds for the countless large flocks of many migrating birds, and the ones that live off of it ...  Jackson Park shrinks ever further.  Plus, the middle of the baseball diamonds and Cricket field had no lights at night - it was great for stargazing ...

REARWIN SPEEDSTER  30"   Dumas kit
FLIGHT REPORT #17                 SAT MAY 26 2019

Mandrake and Bloodroot took off the 8 strand 1/8" rubber motor, and built a new 4 strand, 3/16",  twelve inch long, rubber motor, knotted from some old rubber, while waiting for the new rubber order.   Prop hook to rear peg is 13 inches.   So we were just going for some hand wind flights.
We flew a total of 10 flights.   The first three flights were in the Cricket Field.   The Cricket players had their stakes in, but they let me get in three flights before everyone got there for the game.  Then we went to the American Baseball Diamonds in the back, where the grass was really big.   Just finger wind flights, no records, 7 to 12 second flights, keeping it in the field, with nice soft landings, just to get out there in the emerald greenery.   I tried to plan the flights so as to not land on those wooden peg stakes on the Cricket Pitch.

At 10:00 AM, the weather was 63 deg F (feels like 63), winds blowing 7 mph from the NorthEast, gusting to 11 mph,  72% humidity.

Pic #1     2293      The walk out through Jackson Park.
The Cricket players allowed me three flights in the Cricket Field before they all showed up and started warming up for the game.   I tried not to land on those wooden pegs on the pitch.
Pic #2     2294     Sailing out nicely over a carpet of green.
Pic #3     2295     Full wet Spring flight.
Pic #4     2296     The Rearwin is flying half way up the trees, just above and to the left of the turquoise (?) outdoor tennis fencing.
Pic #5     2297     The dandelion flowers are almost done.

Now we are at the Baseball Diamond field for flights four through ten.   Really nice grass here too.

Pic #1     2298     Two continuous pics of the Base ball Diamond field.
Pic #2     2299     They tried to mow the edge of the grass but it was too wet.   The Speedster is flying just  to the left of the top of the lone hydro pole.
Pic #3     2300     Here is a lucky landing, LOL  ie.  NOT in the mud.   Grin
Pic #4     2301     Another view -  Trapper and my backpack are in the background from where it was launched.
Pic #5     2302     The grass is nice and deep and thick, even after mowing ....

Pic #1     2303     Another flight goes out sailing left, and staying in the grass outfield, and staying short of the fence.
Pic #2     2304     Soft landing.  The plane sits showing up white on the intense, verdant green grass, way out there at the bottom of the fence line.
Pic #3     2305     Close up of the above landing.
Pic #4     2306     An even closer look and the landing.  How is that for color?
Pic #5     2307     The Rearwin resting on a towel (things are still very wet),  fluffed up and supported by a bed of high grass.
Pic #6     2308     Another flight out low and turning left.

Pic #1     2309     I can't resist these Springtime grass pics.
Pic #2     2310     On the walk back home now.  The Cricket players are about to start a game.
Pic #3     2311     Wery little wind on the flag by the Spitfire and Hurricane replicas, on the walk back home.
Pic #4     2312     Here we are laying around the deep and freshly cut grass on this grassy knoll, atop which sit the Spit and Hurri replicas.
Pic #5     2313     Really getting hot and muggy -  you really need good "Wellingtons" (rubber) boots when the park is this wet though.

I think just like everywhere else, we had a LOT of rain this spring, and the ground was always saturated - even a small rainfall would cause standing water puddles, and farmers' fields got flooded out, putting them behind planting by at least one month.
But looking back on it all now, these are, right now, the good ol' days of Free Flight rubber powered small park flying.   Cheesy Grin  There are still no actual signs prohibiting flying   Huh  , in our park yet, to spoil it all ...

Pic #1     2319     Empty shot of the Cricket Field.   The land in our County is as flat as a board, just like the Cricket Field.
Pic #2     2320     Leveling off.
Pic #3     2321     Crosswind left turn.
Pic #4     2322     Hard to see - in line with the Spit and Hurri, and going down left at 45 degrees.
Pic #5     2323     Two colors -  green and blue.
Pic #6      2324     On the walk back home.

All was going well, but the rubber broke a strand, so we went home.

We got home at 12:05 PM  and the weather now was 72 deg F ( feels like 77 deg F ),  winds blowing from the South West at  6 mph, gusting to 9 mph, 65% humidity.

Dear Ratz, would you please fix up the pics in my thread?   They are now not showing expanded from a blank thumbnail, like they have always done.   I have to click on them to get them to even show, right beside pics that do work.  Why are they doing that?   Am I doing something wrong?
Here are a three examples -  there are lots more ...

Pics not working,  Pics not working 2,  Pics not working 3

Thank you.

REARWIN SPEEDSTER  30"   Dumas kit
FLIGHT REPORT #19                 FRI JUNE 14 2019
FINAL CRASH

Well ...   better late  Undecided   than never,  here are the pics of the Rearwin Speedster's last flights on  June 14 2019.   One of the pics is a rare pic of a launch, taken by one of the summer student parks workers.  They were pretty impressed, but they only saw two flights and not the crash flight.
I lost the details of the flight log somewhere, but I think it was 6 flights or so,  in border line strong and gusty wind conditions.   I had just put on the new  9 1/2"   Czeck red plastic prop from Volare, and a new rubber motor.   Looking back, I know I should have not been flying in such wind, but lack of good weather can force you to do that.
The second last flight was driven down into the ground by the wind.  I heard the "crack".   But again, not seeing too much visible damage, back it went into the winding stooge, to only worsen the damage on the next flight's landing.

Pic #1      Volare Order
Pic #2     2347    Spring Flower Garden all planted.
Pic #3     2350     The launch -  going left, half way up the trees.
Pic #4     2351     A little steep in the glide path.
Pic #5     2352     A little less steep on the glide path.
Pic #6     2353     A nice spring day though.

REARWIN SPEEDSTER  30"   Dumas kit
FLIGHT REPORT #19                 FRI JUNE 14 2019
FINAL CRASH
cont. from prev reply

I am not sure if I will repair it or not.   Trapper and Mandrake and Bloodroot and I, and all our friends, will be having a "wake" for the ol' Rearwin Speedster.
One point I would like to make clear about this model, for anyone thinking of building it, is as follows ...  I did have to add a substantial amount of clay noseweight to the front of the model.   There are large air intake holes in the front of the nose cowl that are already there, and if you fill them up with gray clay, the model can still look half descent.   That is what I did, and it still flew.   It really is a great high wing, streamlined fuselage model, to fly.    That is how I got my kicks    Grin  -  walking the dog, and small park flying my rubber-powered 30" Rearwin Speedster in the Cricket Field of Jackson Park in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Pic #7     2354     This is the CRASH that did it ...
Pic #8     2355     Touring the Cricket Field nicely
Pic #9     2356     Really broken wing.
Pic #10     4317     Three pics to remember her by.
Pic #11     4349     It was once a nice display model.
Pic #12     4340     Another pic.

The end of Flight Report #19 in Year 2019.

Thanks to everyone for their kind comments   Smiley  and their help, and thanks for watching.  "Wake" to follow ...   For now -  goodbye and so long from Jackson Park.   Cool

Hi Dan!   Thanks for the nice comment.   Smiley  She still needs exploratory surgery to see just how  bad the damage is,  before pronouncing her clinically dead -  it sure looks like it needs new windshield glazing too.   I am sort of apprehensive Undecided about cutting off the tissue, though.

Sad to see the old girl damaged again. It looked like it dived in Richard - was it a gust of wind or similar? She deserves to spend he days quietly in retirement now.

Hi John.  Yes, I think it was the wind driving it down -  or a bad high angle launch,  that stalled it when it was up high,  I'm not sure  -  I lost the log notes.   Yeah ... ,  and I just got that new prop on ...
Anyways,  here is the Speedster back at the Hangar.    Mandrake and Bloodroot have dug out the four white foam board Jigs for the fuselage,   and proceed to examine the visible damage.

Pic #1     3586     The center section wing does not look good.
Pic #2     3583     The wilndshield roof was obviously ripped off.
Pic #3     3581     Mandrake and Bloodroot climb onto the wing for a better look.
Pic #4     3582     View looking straight down.
Pic #5     3585     There is a lot of balsa missing.

They then got off the plane, and were thinking of setting up the fuse jigs, for exploratory surgery,  just to see where it broke and how bad it was -   when all of a sudden, the security perimeter of the Speedster Maintenance Hangar was breached ...

Pic #6     3598     Bloodroot  is suddenly attacked from behind by a monster mutant Cockroach,  Shocked  with oversized jaw pincers clamped around Bloodroot's throat.  Tongue
Blooodroot shouts "DRAKE",  then starts choking and gurgling ... Embarrassed
Mandrake   Angry   gets there in three strides  "HOLD ON  BLOOD" ...
