Well, we didn't do as well at SoCal State in the trial event, as we'd hoped to. A broken wire in the harness to charge the capacitors from a pair of D cells, held the kids back. Though they showed a lot of initiative and quick thinking, getting the judges' permission to speak to me, and also go from team to team to borrow a battery that somehow got one plane charged (Matching connectors?? I wasn't sure). They wound up in Fifth Place, which was quite good, considering. They though fast and thought on their feet, and pulled out an OK finish from what would have been a disaster.

Onward and upward:

What electric motors do you all use for these Electric Wright Stuff planes? We used motors, gearboxes and propellers from the Indoor RC "Vapor" and "Ember" planes, which gave pretty good performance and endurance. Several 40-second flights during practice, and one 50-second flight. But another school at SoCal racked up a couple of 120-second flights, I was stunned. (They won, deservedly). I don't know what motors etc. they used, but they were certainly superior to ours.

Has anyone ever played around with the motors from the buzzer in a cell phone? Any idea where to get one (other than cannibalizing a phone)?

Mkird, a great tip! Thank you!

Most of them seem to have the little offset weight on the shaft, that makes it vibrate. Any idea how to get it off the shaft? Are the press-fit on? So maybe they can be pulled off? Maybe without damaging the motor bearings?

In 2018 Electric Wright Stuff was added to the SoCal State Div. C tournament as a Trial Event.

In 2019 they did it again, except as a Div. B Trial event.

Anybody heard anything about whether they might do it again? An EWS Trial Event in Div.B and/or Div. C for the 2020 SoCal State tournament? Or possibly a full event for the 2020-2021 season in either Division?

Inquiring minds want to know!  Grin

It's a cheap 7mm coreless motor I found that seems to work well. It's a little hot of a wind so it does burn off power too quickly. I'm using Ladybird props as they seem to be pretty efficient and cheap (they give a full vertical climb on E20 models despite being smaller than what's allowed, I know that much!). No gearbox at the moment...maybe later.

A major issue with capacitor storage devices for such models is the wide range of actual capacitance for the parts.  A typical tolerance specification for a 5F super capacitor is +100% -0% (AVX 3V SCC series for example).  There are some super capacitors available with tighter tolerances (such as a Maxwell with a 4.5F to 6.0F range) but these still have a wide range.  With such wide ranges for a nominal specified capacity, it behooves the competitors to purchase a large number of super capacitors and cherry pick for the best.  The advantage goes to those teams with more financial resources.
