Hello experienced aviators F1D

Here the new guy from the Netherlands i'm trying to follow the results of the European championship F1D.
There also beautiful photo's of the championship,but there is one i'm don't understand what is happening and what the intention is of this?
please can someone explaining this ?

Span check for wing or stabilizer.  The heavy nut is used to tension the strings.

I assume the two vertical thread are the guage to check that wingspans don't exceed 55 cm. It's a go-guage.
