The last couple of months I have slowly been working on the 16" Junkers D1 from DPC Models. The work has been slow due to many, many major projects going on here at home. Everything from tree removal, fence replacement, to a new kitchen floor early next month. Thanks to an unexpectedly generous inheritance from my Mom we can do some much needed repair and renovation on our 31 year old house.
But enough of that, on to the build so far. And Pictures!!!
Pic #1 - The bits of the kit. Daves usual excellent laser cutting, light balsa and clear plans and parts ID sheet. Pic #2 - Sheet one of the plans. Pic #3 - Sheet two of the plans. Pic #4 - The parts ID sheet. Pic #5 - Building the stab on the mag board. Pic #6 - The stab and rudder on the mag board.
Nice and easy build so far.

Next installment. As I stated I've been puttering along on this for a few weeks. Partially because of the other projects, but also because of the heat here in California's central valley. No AC in the shop so I only have a couple hours in the morning to get anything done.
Pic#1 - The stab and rudder all framed up. Pic #2 - The outer wing panels done. Pic #3 - The wing root sections built. Pic #4 - The pieces of the wing laid out on the plan. Pic #5 - The landing gear struts. I might add a 1/32" gusset on the joint. Pic #6 - The first fuselage side framed up.
Coming up The joys of the fuselage alignment!!

Okay, this episode will chronicle my attempts to get the fuselage sides aligned so I could add the formers. Pic #1 - My first attempt using the mag board. I could get the sides aligned, but every time I touched them something moved. I tried several different arrangements of magnets but wasn't satidsfied that I would get a good result. Pic #2 - Decided to try using a cradle made from 5/32" foam board. Once I got the sizes right and the centerline marked I glued everything together. Pic #3 thru #5 - Various shots of the sides in the cradle as I added the top formers. Pic #5 - The fuselage with all the formers in place. I'm happy with the straightness. And yes, I moved the rear pin forward!! This brings up to date my progress on this project. Things are finally calming down a bit so hopefully I can get more than a couple hours a week on it. Next up is getting the stringers on the fuselage.

Hi Dan! Great to see you back. Your 16" Junkers looks great so far. And that is an excellent jig setup. It looks like there is going to be no guesswork for the wing incidence, what with those nicely laser cut square holes, in the wing mounting plates on the fuse, that locate the square wing spars. Temps in the low 70's this morning, able to get a little work done before it got hot.
Pic #1 - Gluing the outer and root wing sections together. Pic #2 - #4 - Various shots of the fuselage with the stringers in place. The tail section on top was a little bit of a head scratcher but got it figured out.

Very little progress over the last week, more house stuff getting in the way. Today they start replacing our kitchen floor so we get to look forward to eating out every meal for the next four days!!
I did start drawing the lines on the tissue to simulate the corrugations, and boy is that a tedious task. But I think it'll look pretty cool when I finish. I usually spend 15-20 min at a time. Longer than that and I start to rush a bit.
Still have to do another piece of green for the fuselage and top wing surfaces.

After a brutal week+ dealing with getting a new kitchen floor installed, then assembling two new kitchen cabinets there is a smidgen of light appearing in the tunnel. Need to re-arrange things from the old to the new, but that can be done a little at a time.
So hopefully sometime this week I can get my work area in the garage back and resume work on the D1. I need to finish drawing lines on the tissue so I can start covering. I have the wheels and the machine guns partially constructed, and have started to laminate the landing gear struts.

Was finally able to find my workspace again and get some work done on the D1…
Had a real Doh!!! Moment. After spending a couple of hours to get the lines hand drawn on the tan tissue, I was faced with an even longer session for the olive. Then my senior braincell had a spark and it occured to me. I googled horizontal lines, copied them into a word document and sent them to my printer. Boy did I feel dumb!!
Anyway, now have the bits covered, a little touch up and then I can start adding the sorta scale bits

Neat
I would not have considered Googling for parallel lines. I would have drawn them in TurboCad and then have had to fool around with line thickness and so on.

Nice work Dan - googling for parallel lines? I would have done the same as Paul - used CAD. It just shows how the brain can miss simplicity even when it is in front of your nose The beauty of reading other builds - there is always something to learn. John

Actually I misspoke, I used Duck, Duck, Go instead of google, but that's another story. Did a bit more yesterday. Got the fuselage covered, engine mounted and nose block covered. It's rough, but from 5' or more away isn't so bad! Another senior moment: I Very Carefully lined up the tail skid, checked the dimensions twice, and then ........ Glued the sucker to the TOP of the fuselage. Luckily realized it and removed it before the glue set. Sheesh! Still have work to do on the landing gear, wheels and machine guns. Pic #1: The fuselage with engine bits in place Pic #2: The nose block in place Pic #3: The tailskid, this time mounted where it's supposed to go! Pic #4: The bits I still need to work on

Almost there Dan. The covering looks impressive - the colour and the lines for the corrugations.

I got the markings on, like the way they look. I'm trying to make the lift handles for the fuselage but those tiny suckers are not co-operating at all!!

Dan, Might I suggest using a piece of broom straw for the lift handles. May need to be split depending on how wide the straw is. You'll probably need tweezers for assembly but well worth the effort when completed.

You should be able to find a range of thin styrene rod (Evergreen or similar) in your hobby shop - just wrap it around a suitably sized dowel and pop it in boiling water for a few seconds - job done

I have a roll of reed probably from AC Moore I use in instances like these. Wrap it and boil it. I never tried styrene but it would probably be better.

Guys, The lift and foot step are straight rods mounted to "D" brackets.

Perhaps... Card cut-outs for the D brackets glued to the fuselage then thread through some button thread. Pull as taught* as possible then smear with cyano to stiffen it?
*Use long thread, anchor one end with tiny dod of CA, pull through and anchor t'other end ditto, cut and then smear rest with CA.
