Well despite a rather bleak weather forecast for the rest of the south of the Uk we enjoyed some very nice flyable autumn weather in the East Midlands

I have to say, as I packed the car in the morning in the rain and wind I was somewhat doubtful that we would get a good days flying but very happy to be proved wrong.

The flying only event attracted 9 entries with motive power ranging from IC, electric, EDF, CO2, and rubber. Although the wind was fairly light, 10mph tops, the air was very turbulent which seems to be the way at Buckminster from my experience of flying FF here.

Some good flights were made by many but you had to pick your moment ,if you could, to avoid the blustery turbulence.

On a personal front, the PZL Wilga made some nice flights..  followed by some alarming landings  Undecided. It did cover a lot of ground though so I spent some of the competition hiking over the Leicestershire countryside. It was a very pleasant way to spend a Saturday, I encountered Hares and Partridges on my retrieval walks and of course the flying was great fun

In the competition Pete Fardell lead the field with his AC Comte performing in its usual stately manner. Ivan Taylors Crusader chased him home followed by a joint third place between Mike Smith and ...er...a Mr M Smith. Mike's EDF Saunders Roe and electric HP0/400 achieved identical scores, my own CO2 Piper Family Cruiser came 4th. ... The Wilga with its death spiral landing approach..er last !

Over the winter I will look at remaking the slats having 'spoken' to P Hayward the model designer - see PZL Wilga thread

What I presume was Pete's winning flight was near perfect, as was Ivan's Crusader.

Thanks all! I’ve never won an actual cup before! Am I allowed to get my name scratched in under the 27 illustrious ones already on the back of it? A very enjoyable day and I didn’t even mind driving home in wet socks having forgotten to pack my wellies this morning. Big thanks to Doug and Paul for running it.
I took a few pics too and will upload them later. Here’s one to be going on with though... Is it a bird? Is it a plane?... No, it’s YHWM-Man! (He has YHWMs instead of hands and the power to make them fly!)

Actually not 27 illustrious names but only 15, mainly because from 1966-75 it goes Coates, Manley, Coates, Coates, Coates, Manley, Coates, Manley, Coates, Manley, Coates! And Eric Coates won it in 1960 too.

(I think I read that the Selby cup, until recent times, was a somewhat bigger part of the scale FF scene, being awarded to the person who amassed the most podium placings over the whole contest season. Is that right?)

Pete, part of the 'prize' is that you have to get it engraved yourself.  The Selby began as a Concours event - that's why the first name is J O'd with a duration power model. It then quickly became a FF scale trophy run in the Northern Area. I remember driving up from Devon to find the organiser was 'at his mam's for a gravy dinner' and turned up late afternoon. It was a gale and Ted Smales won with a rubber Douglas 0 something which flew backwards half the length of Elvington runway.
Then it got lost for many years until Gordon unearthed it and we began the 'modern era'. The Selby was one of the three big trophies along with the ER and Superscale. After it reappeared, the contest continued as a 'static judged'  event but now it is just flying only

Cheers Bill. In my ignorance I didn’t (and still don’t really) even know what a ‘concours event’ means but I did wonder about J O’d being at the top of the list. I don’t have a problem paying to get my name put on a trophy which already has his on it though!

Concours d'elegance competitions were just 'which is the nicest-looking model of any type' - shiniest, best made, the model they like best. Send the engraving receipt to the STC.
