TIGER MOTH  17.5" FREE FLIGHT RUBBER POWERED  LASER CUT  DUMAS KIT 208
SCALE  1: 19.9     ADDED TO DUMAS LIST   FEB 10 2006
COPYRIGHT 2004   $26.00 US

My interest has switched to a civilian, between the wars, "scale-looking" biplane (no guns), that I can fly in my small flying field - the Cricket Grounds of Jackson Park - this summer.  I have had this walnut sized laser cut Tiger Moth kit sitting around for a few years now, and I had already made copies of the plan sheets, and photocopies of the laser cut balsa sheets  etc.   I have been studying up on it all, and it looks like 3 degrees positive incidence on the upper wing and 1 degree incidence on the lower wing, no downthrust on the prop shaft, and the stab is straight even with the datum thrust line,  parallel with the prop shaft.
I still have to really clean my building board, and put on new waxed paper, and organize my supplies but I have some good pics of the plans and instructions already taken.   I build slow and I use white glue, and it is good to know that I have 10 years to finish this model ....   so ...  no pressure ....  Cheesy
For starters, here are a few pics of a Tiger Moth that flew into our Historic Hangar for a visit a while back.

Two Tiger Moth builds running concurrently eh?  Good.

TIGER MOTH  17.5 INCH     LASER CUT   DUMAS KIT 208   SCALE   1:20

Hi Lurker!   I hope to be learning from the Master Modeller Contest Builder's thread ... Wink

PLANS
One big folded plan sheet (I prefer rolled plans) - that needs to be cut along the nice thick dashed line into two big sheets.
On the right is the  very large plan sheet -  I cut off the edges to  28" x 20",  and it fits on a  white 20" x 30" x 3/16" Ross Craft Board.
The plan has big thick lines, and large, easy to read, upper case capitalized, BLOCK LETTERING  throughout.

INSTRUCTIONS
The other large single sheet has four (4) instruction pages (you just have to cut them out), a materials list, parts locator sheet (no parts are inked with numbers), plastic parts diagram, and 3 - View Drawing.
There are also more sixteen (16) more framework iso view diagrams in these instructions sheets - very revealling and explanatory.

Pic #1     3797  snip    The big sheet is cut into two, and at the bottom,  I cut out the original faded Instruction sheet into six sheets for a "working copy" to use and highlight etc.
I also took four different section pics of the plan.   I hope it is readable.

TIGER MOTH  17.5 INCH  RUBBER POWER FREE FLIGHT LASER CUT   DUMAS KIT 208

Here is a few pics and links for reference.   I will get to the last of the kit review.   I have actually spent one day, a couple of days ago, and I scratch built up a new removable balsa noseblock, to replace the vacuum formed plastic one supplied in the kit,  just to see if I could build one.    It turned out pretty good.

Here is a link to the Dumas site for the Tiger Moth kit.

Here is the Wikipedia link for the Tiger Moth.

Here are the three Dumas pics of their 17 1/2" Tiger Moth model in the supplied yellow tissue.

TIGER MOTH  17.5 INCH    LASER CUT   DUMAS KIT 208   SCALE   1:20

KIT CONTENTS

Well, I got a lot accomplished last night and today.   The 3 to 6 inches of snow missed us here in the Windsor/Detroit area - we only got one inch -  but the bitter cold came in.  At daybreak, for the short dog walk, the temp was 6 deg F (feels like minus 6 deg F), which means 5 layers of clothes, winter gloves, winter trappers hat, big hood, long underwear, and big liner winter boots.
So here is the last of the kit contents, then its white glue time.   It needs to get built in time for the long uncut spring grass.   I either have to learn to use Cyano acrylate super glue, or, hire some extra help at the DeHavilland Hangar.  I'm opting for the second choice.

Pic #1     3841     Full view of kit contents without the plan and instruction sheets.   Note the stiff white paper patterns, for parts of the the fuse, that will be used instead of tissue.   Note also, the excellent "Wing Alignment Cards" that are supplied in this kit, to get the wing angles correct.   Also note the heavy lasercut over-burn on the balsa parts sheets.    The green tape is holding the little noseblock assembly I has started.

Pic #2     3838     The laser cuts are very clean though.
Pic #3     3839     Both sheets as seen through the window light.

Pic #4     3847     Here is the bottom side of the laser cut sheets - lots of burn but clean laser cut.
Pic #5     3848     And here is the top side.

Pic #6     3849     At least on this model, I did not forget   Embarrassed  to sand down both sides of the balsa parts sheets.   Now I remember why I hate balsa dust   Sad  in the air so much.   Almost to the fun part - just gluing up the laser cut parts - and hopefully, minimum sanding left in the model.   Smiley

I will be cutting out parts later today - it is still very cold here.    Here are six pics, to keep the interest going.   I am looking for different logos to choose from also.   There are logos on Pic #'s  2,4, and 5.   Huh  I can't make out the first two ... Undecided

I'm envious Richard, all those choices!!  Extensive research for the Guardian has resulted in solid blue, solid silver, light beige top-white bottom, all white with a couple red bands on the fuselage, sigh.

Will be watching with interest!

TIGER MOTH 17.5 INCH     LASER CUT   DUMAS KIT 208   SCALE   1:20

LOGO

While I was relaxing and goofing off, I searched for the actual Tiger Moth insect, that this plane is named after.    These colorful examples should make for an easily traced out hand design,  for an artwork Logo.   If the trailing edge of the hind wing of the insect is yellow , as in Moth 2  Pic #1,  I would have to pencil in some kind of thin outline (what color ?), to mark the contrast with the yellow of the plane ...

Note the size of the eyes in Moth 4  front view in Pic #2  .
