There are some updates on Rantoul.

Whatever has supposed to happen with Hangar 3 (where we used to fly) fell through, so the space is available to rent again. I believe we have enough in the treasury to basically cover the major costs for 3-4 flying sessions.

That said, I have sense of hangar envy, given that there is a beautiful Cat3 site right next door. Several of us flew in the hangar last fall under good conditions outside and the air inside was good to great, with the caveat that the lights are a problem.

We always complain about not having good sites. I am proposing we get this site for a five-year lease.

I believe the village will accept this offer - $10,000 per year for 5 years. I estimate we will also need about $5000 up-front for other expenses related to making this site great for indoor flying, e.g. lift rental for light removal, new lighting, material for fixing holes, etc. I've worked this all out in a spreadsheet I can share.

To make this happen, we will need at least 12 individuals who are willing to put forth $1000/year for five years for this to work. That would give us a site that would be available to us 24/7/365.

Please PM me if you are interested, even if you cannot contribute the entire amount.

So far I have commitment from one person besides myself. We need 10 more.

I have set a deadline for March 30th. If we cannot get that many by then, I will abandon this dream and we can go back to Hangar 3, which would hopefully not kick us out again.

Regards.

Hello Mike,
could you tell us more about the Cat3 site, or are there any photos? What is the ceiling height?

We understand from the blueprints that it is 99' dead center.
Exposed girders will limit that height somewhat.

Photos to be posted soon.

Obviously, with Covid, this plan has been put on hold.

Depending on the situation, we may try to schedule a session or two in Hangar 3 in September or October.

Stay safe everyone!

I am from South Mississippi and have son in Rantoul, works in Gibson City.  You guys got a club that flies regularly?  When I'm up there id like to see what you are up to.
