Thanks! I have discovered that extra engine detail - even of dubious distinction - can sure help get the CG forward! Which = stability.

Today was the first day our local group was allowed back indoors - so the first opportunity for the Pilatus Porter floatplane to play therein!  Outside I was getting fabby flights on 0.125 rubber up to 45 secs, but even though I switched to 0.109 for indoors this still resulted in rafter-smacking action!  So I made up a modest loop of 0.093 and kept the yaw fairly tight (to prevent any further smackery against either rafter or wall) and finally got this very nice 25 second flight from hand-launch (courtesy of Andy Blackburn): https://photos.app.goo.gl/hscrYGuXRNJjVic78Next move is to make up a dolly for proper "ROW" for when hopefully we'll be allowed back in next month! And, as is fast becoming traditional for Lurker Industries builds, I have to report UC woes. If you build a C. 5 for indoors you may wish to consider the UC more robust. Had to abandon glide testing. Note to self this one requires a slow launch and a good deal more nose weight than is currently installed.
Should be fairly straight-forward to sort out.

Good to hear of Mooney action again. Nice floatplane flight, Jon. Lurker, those pioneer undercarriages are a menace. On the full size aircraft I think they often broke too. Very effective life-saving crumple zones I dare say. I’m sure your carpentry crew will soon have the Chiribiri ready to go again though. It is a very pretty little thing.
As far as my own Mooneys go, I haven’t tried the Demoiselle yet. I think I’ll probably wait for an indoor session. I’m taking the DHC Beaver to Buckminster tomorrow though, hoping to get in some more good flights.

Aye. I was more than half expecting to have troubles with it as it was a fight to get a reasonable join between the bamboo and the basswood. As for repairs; at the moment I'm thinking of either v. thin strips of cyano impregnated paper strapping or v. fine thread, possibly wire, bindings again with cyano. |

Still unhappy that I missed that Buckminster meeting.
Ever hopeful that the indoor meetings will soon return, I stripped the Wittman racer to do more detailing .... not that there is much.
I got impatient to see the finished pilot so have done it in one session .... unusual for me.
More of a caricature of Steve Wittman than replica .... I've tried to give the impression of the checked shirt I have seen in photos.

Coincidentally I had the Keleher Lark out today. It's been challenging to trim, needing the CG farther forward than I expected. The thrust adjuster has also been problematic, as I tend to lose the reference point when attempting to make small tweaks. My Demoiselle is the only one of my completed lockdown builds still not flown. Hopefully it'll get its chance once we get back to indoor flying.

I think it stems from my bostonian experience ... I have been happy to see my bostonians get by the 50 second mark, especially for a semi scale one. I've managed this with most, but the one that I didn't was my 'Chesty Jeep' vaguely scale racer. The best flight I got with it was a straight line dash across the full length of the Nottinghan University hall in 2004 ... only to destroy itself on equipment on the far wall. It flew great in a straight line but had struggled with a turn. I am a long term fan of racers from people like Chris Strachan and Tim Horne ... but am yet to fly one myself.
You are right though .... I won't get worked up about it .... much!

The Mooney racer has a more purposeful look than my 'Jeep' though, with better vertical tail area.
The black markings were to cover up a paint spill! .... it's from the days when I got a model finished by the following weekend!

I'm glad to see that there's still activity on this thread. Lovely flights from Pete and company. Mike's Keleher Lark was looking quite promising in that last segment. Mike, I saw that Zaic Utility Special in your video, just plain gorgeous. Do you have pictures, or better a build thread somewhere?
I'm still working on my Erla 5A. I just finished the landing gear last night. I also rigged the model up with DT - it may be wishful thinking on my part but better be safe than sorry. I have to install a cockpit floor to hide the rubber and have to make a tailwheel before I start covering. I hope to get there within this long weekend.

He doesn't have it listed for sale at present, but kindly cut one at my request and tucked it into a pending order after I lost my Windindicator. Hmmm.
