This weekend is the annual Modelair Mayfly at Old Warden , unfortunately world events have over taken us and the event has been cancelled but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the fun of the event

So here for one year only is the VIRTUAL Mayfly

Over couple of  days I will post some memories of great Mayfly's from youtube by many contributers of the past few years as well as some pics.

If you have videos and pictures please do add to the experience

The Mayfly has become one of my favourite model flying events of the year, not just because it the first  outdoor event of the year but because of the atmosphere, the modellers that come along and of course the huge variety of models seen on the day

I'll post some videos tomorrow when the Mayfly begins but it seems word has got out and campers are gathering already for the event

Great idea Chris Smiley ... do we wait for tomorrow?

Seeing Pete Iliffe in the photos reminds me of some great Mayfly events. One of my own personal favourites is one of Pete flying his Fokker Spinne not long after dawn when we were camping. Bill Brown with his latest oddity. Sunny days with the Bluebottle gang .... I could go on, but there might be real tears!

Russ post whenever you like

I'll post some videos when I normally would do at the end of each day but anything in between is great

Lovely stuff Russ, from the days when video was square

Looks like some of the campers are up already so here's a video from last year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE1YrqSm6Mk&t=35s

Includes Monz's Fokker D7 in flight, Pete Fardell's Eindecker and Mick's Ebanezer

More Ebanezers later...

I'm going to enjoy this .... shout up if I'm putting out stuff that has already been 'overexposed'!
Enjoyed the video, Chris  Smiley

My early videos were short because of memory limitations 'in those days'.
Here's a short clip of my little Powerhouse coming in to land.
This flew so well that I have always flown it under elevated to keep it in the field.

https://youtu.be/bL9Ag3MWJHo

I have some film shots from an earlier visit ... I'll have to dig them out.

This is a terrific idea, Chris! Just need a way to replicate the lovely engine smell, and maybe someone shouting “Heads!” every few minutes!

Here’s Pete Smart’s Beardmore Inflexible flying at the 2018 edition...

And also Monz’s film of my Auster Agricola using chain reaction physics to cause a lady to fall off her chair in 2016...

Powerhouse looks great Russ and good to see the Agricola going well

No Old Warden model event would be complete without the fizzing sound of the Rapier powered jets so here's the ever present Roger with some of his

For the past 10 years possibly or more, I have met up with one of my oldest friends from my art college days at these Old Warden events

In 2015 Steve came up from East London on his lovely Velocette MAC, a round trip of around 120 miles, with a wooden box strapped to back full of free flight models.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mVRLvKOyOQ

Steve is huge Ebenezer fan and has won the prestigious Ebenezer trophy as well a making the final a number of times. Last year he made the final again, with his rendition of Wylie Coyote riding a rocket and Totoro, a character from a well known Japanese Anime film both powered by DC Wasps

In the final Andy Sephton was clapped the winner. The scoring system is basically a clap'o'meter judged by event organiser Ken Sheppard, seen holding the trophy. It's a great fun event the emphasis very much on the fun bit . Ken and Sheila do a great job organising these Old Warden events

Having just rewatched Steve's video I had forgotten Mark Deans'  hugely optimistic Titanic-enezer. Always a man for a unusual design, keep em coming

So flying ends on the first day of the virtual Mayfly and the usual suspects retire to the campsite to continue micro RC flying in the campsite field.

I can smell the BBQ's from here...

That'll be good Russ.

Sunday lunchtime is traditional the time for the Ebenezer Competitions so in keeping with tradition here's a video of the event from 2018 by Steve Roberts

Here's some more Ebenezer action

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaSUVsTwO2E. Steve's Spitenezer

and this is year Steve won the Ebenezer trophy. The day didn't start well though as he broke the tail off his Tomboy on the garden gate and dropped his flask...and it was a good one that with a separate compartment for the milk !

The Mayfly is all about the atmosphere on the free flight field so here's a nice video of the 2016 Mayfly by MrDazedOne. It's 15 mins long and has captured the atmosphere of the event very well

This is the 2014 event again by MrDazedOne

also from the 2014 is this video by Simonb2795

I'll put some of my ebenezer stuff up later ... hopefully some will spot their models.

Going back to the comment I made about Pete Iliffe.
This for me is pure aeromodelling... just out for the joy of flying. This sequence is not that long after dawn.

Edit: this is 2008

It will take a time to go through everything, Chris ... we will have to keep this going for a while I think!
I have some short video clips that have probably only seen myself.

2008 again.... and I knew things would get to me a little.

This was the year when the around the world model from SFA arrived in the UK.
The black flash in memory of Bhagat from SFA.
Both Bill Brown and Ian Middlemiss are no longer with us ... both early members here on HPA

Going back to 2003 when there was a competition in memory of Doug McHard.
Ron Moulton headed a sale of Doug's models ... I have photos of this ... I'll process them later.

Edit: this was on the scale day that year.

Superb shots Russ.

I have seen Peter's  Fokker fly before , though not at dawn it must have been very atmospheric. I always marvel at Peter's building skills, even the bits that will be hidden are made and finished to such a high standard and if that isn't enough, they actually fly very well too. I wonder how he's getting on with his big Albatros ? I guess if the Mayfly was more than just virtual we would have been updated and possibly had a glimpse of the model

It's great to see some of the history of Mayfly , the modellers that flew there and indeed the history of HPA. Thanks for sharing these Russ

If this morph's into a Mayfly/Old Warden memories thread, if that's not actually what it is anyway, then I look forward to more

Right last batch of videos from me as the day draws to a close.

The Mayfly isn't only about Free Flight...well ok it is for me but there are other sides of the hobby there too. Control line with stunt, speed , scale and combat, even carrier deck all happening at the event along with an RC flightline and some amazing scale aero engines. Tether cars make a regular appearance and there is always the line of trade stalls and private sellers

So here's some non-free flight videos from the Mayfly

This video by tbobborap1 features a very nice large scale DH Tiger Moth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUWyD5gchnE

While in front of the FF flight area there are often scale model aero engines being run

tbobborap1 caught this wonderful Bentley BR2 rotary engine running in 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsyhOdRXsPA

along with this Gypsy Mk1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL8HKUpodls

and this, my favourite, a superb Anzani Y Type . It almost makes me want to build a 1/4 scale Bleriot to put it in

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmuGkR22ypI

Huge thanks to Mick Linacre for the camping pics. It looks like fun I am very tempted

Not sure if it was a Mayfly but certainly some time ago. I built the Victoria Parker from the Aeromodeller which arrived on the Friday before OW Sunday, although the faded tissue suggests it's the following year. Eric would phone his tailor in Goole once a year to order a new, identical, set of trousers. Note the flyers along the hedge.

Way back in 1994 I was working in the UK and went to as many model plane events as I could...  here's a few quick snaps from 'the vault' that I'd like to add to the virtual Old Warden thread - you might be able to help with the identities...  I think the last one is Chris Hutchinson
