Tried to fly my power job today at the club. Struggled to get it to fire and it wouldn't run. Got home and tried it, fired first flick and emptied the tank, never even touched the needle. What do I do, just fly it indoors?

Not ran a Cox for many years, but a voltage drop in the cold perhaps?

Maybe you keep your batterie in the car or in your pocket to keep it warm. And be sure to have the batterie fully charged before leaving home.

I even tried a new battery and another club member tried his battery, each time we got a good glow. We just assumed it was a fuel feed problem, clearly it wasn't.

I'm fairly sure that a higher nitro content helps in cold weather?

Back in Illinois when it was cold we would hold the engine in the cars exhaust to warm the model motor up. I also seem to remember priming with lighter fluid.

The fuel is ignited by a combination of compression and the platinum coated nichrome wire heating element. The methanol keeps the head element hot by the catalytic reaction with the platinum coating.

Because heat is involved, and I imagine that the Cox heads tend to have a colder element versus hot because higher nitro fuel is usually used, they get fussy when the overall head temperature is much colder.

That is my guess as to why the Cox engines may seem more fussy.  Huh (Again, it is just a guess. Grin )

I found that when the temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit that the fuel mixture must be enriched.  If I remember right, I think I turned the needle valve an extra 3/4 of a turn. It's also a good too warm your batteries on your car defroster. And make sure you have good connections between the batteries and glow plug clip.
