BMFA 2022 Free Flight and 'Power' Nationals

Please see the attached 'screenshot'.  Whatever form the BMFA's FF and 'Power' Nationals take this year - they are not going to be taking place at RAF Barkston Heath, unfortunately.

I seem to have read something somewhere recently about 'permits' for North Luffenham and Salisbury - but I can't remember where I read this.  Anybody know where I might have seen this, please?

Salisbury is too far away for me - but North Luffenham is 'doable'.  I would probably be only spectating though, and have never been there before.  A quick look on a 'map site' reveals a 'Thor Missile Site RAF North Luffenham Permanently Closed' - which I am presuming is the venue?  If it is the venue, could somebody in the know please indicate on the attached 'screenshot' where the site access is.

It's 3mm above the t in MOD North Luffenham but there will surely be signs.

I doubt you will need a permit just to attend the Nats only at Luffenham

Yes a shame but on the bright side good for Buckminster which it will help financially I trust and as I understand the August Nationals originally made a substantial loss each year that will help with the finances as well.  Also from my point of view the Scale FF Nationals will apparently be at Sculthorpe so that is a plus.  I hope it does not deter entrants however.  It is not so “tidy” of course as Barkston but has runways that are useable  and the grass is generally longer.   It can be a little breezy however and it is slightly higher than the surrounding area.  I think to that accommodation and eateries are slightly more available than I recall of my days at Barkston.

Thanks for the details RalphS. I knew that I'd seen this somewhere recently - just couldn't remember where.

Hi again Bill.  Whilst you could be correct - I (and I guess you, also) know what 'assuming' anything could result in, especially as far as the MOD is concerned.  It would be comforting to receive an authoritative answer from somebody (Ken Faux?) that a person turning up on 29 May 2022, to just spectate, would not be turned away by the Army at the Gatehouse, because they do not have a 'permit to fly'.

I note that the cost of a permit for North Luffenham is £35.  If a permit is required to just spectate, then this could effectively make this part of the FF Nationals this year a 'competitors only' event?

Jez, the permit is for people who want to fly at Luffenham throughout the year - not this meeting. If you want reassurance write to Mike Woodhouse at the FreeFlight Technical Committee.
And you won't need to go anywhere near the guardhouse; the road in is to the housing.

Jez, You only need a permit for flying outside of competition days. Here is a quote from the FFTC Permit drop-down.... " Free Flight Competition days are open to any BMFA free flight flier."

I think you will find that the permit you refer to is a year flying permit. If you go to https://freeflight.bmfa.org/2022-nationals-2 this is on the free flight technical committee page under the heading Nationals 2022 I believe. It’s only £10 to enter so hopefully will be free to spectators. Enjoy
