Fubar E20

Several years ago I printed a plan from the January 1982 issue of Flying Models of Al Lidbergs CO2 version of the FUBAR free flight. I printed the plans for a 20” wingspan and plan to fly it as an E20.
I’ve cut out most of the parts and am about ready to start pinning them to the plan.

I can’t find my copy of the 1/82 Flying Models magazine. Does someone have this issue and can provide me a pdf of the building article. It would be very much appreciated.

Where can I get a 10F Super Capacitor, charging jack, charger, and coreless motor setup. J and H Aerospace is out of stock right now.

Where can I find information on fabricating a capacitor Charging jack and Capacitor Charger myself.

I am beginning to think FUBAR is referring to the strange underslung stabilizer/DT. I am having a hard time understanding how to hang the stabilizer under the body and make a good DT linkage and make adjustments when flight trimming. The 1/82 FM build article does not make this very clear.
When and where was the original FUBAR published?
Where could I find other diagrams and plans that show how to make an underslung stabilizer?

Thanks for pointing the way to the Outerzone.
It's still not very clear how it works..
But eventually, when I get to music wire and rubber bands, I will figure it out.

The plan shows a triangular piece of wire with an aluminium tube.

Fix the aluminium tube to the fuselage just ahead of the t/p leading edge. This forms a "latch" that holds the tailplane up when the d/t band is in place.

When the d/t band burns through the "latch" swings down releasing the l/e of the tailplane which being pulled by the band wrapped around the t/e.

It took me a few minutes to grasp this.

Ask the internet for the military acronym meaning of FUBAR.  Another acronym along the same lines is SNAFU.  AS in This is a real SNAFU, everything is FUBAR.  Maybe it does refer to the odd DT.

Bentodd, In the May 2002 Flying Models Magazine, Larry Kruse says in his F/F Sport column referring to a new book then available, A Review of Ray Mathew’s Free Flight Designs, by Tandy Nelson, was that “The chief detriment to the FUBAR was that the stabilizer was on the bottom of the fuselage, making a pop-up dethermalizer problematic at best.”

Larry goes on to write that In Nelson’s interviews with Mathews,” that there was a 1953 X series of Fubar designs that had the stabilizer placed on top of the fuselage!”

This book was 133 pages and was available in 2002 for $16.00 plus $2.00 shipping. Maybe Tandy Nelson is on here and would like to comment..
This makes me think I should build this E20 as a FUBAR X and put the stabilizer on top. I have not yet been able to find the plans for a FUBAR X online. Since E20 rules are pretty open, I think I could just build the stabilizer on top of what I already have and call it a FUBAR X.

I did find a photo on modelaircraft.org of the 2014 Championships of Jerry Murphy CO holding a beautiful 1/2A E-Nos FUBAR X.

Maybe set the DT to trigger tailplane downwards? A friend of mine had his P-30 with such setup, putting the model into inverted dive. The reasoning was that P-30 models are so light that they will not come down from strong thermal with the normal DT setup, but they are light enough not to be damaged if landing inverted. I'd guess this would apply to E-20, too?

Is there a reason you can't release the wing l/e rather than the tailplane?

The Nov/Dec Digest of the NFFS has an article on the Mini Hogan 34 clearly illustrating an underslung Stabilizer DT in the plans and nice color pictures.

I have the wing pinned up now and all ready for glueing. I’m a slow builder.
