Pitts Special (Profile)
Description: This profile Pitts peanut scale model dates back to September 1972 American Aircraft Modeler and it was designed by David Jones in 1970. The laser cut kit was made by one of our SAM 8 club members (Will Tilse) from an AutoCad file produced by our club President (Steve Dona) who scanned a hard copy of the plans from an original magazine. I downloaded the pdf files of this magazine article from OuterZone, which I have attached to this email. I had mentioned to Jeff Nisley that I used the Ed Lidgard “Zip” method for preforming the wings’ highly cambered airfoils (see attached photo). I will right a short “How To” article on the “Zip” airfoil, which worked like a charm for this model.

From Higgphanx1...with permission to upload
At first, the model flew as though it had a drunk pilot in command, then I added 1.1 grams of nose ballast (shifting the CG forward by an astounding 1/16” !!!) and the model then flew perfectly. It really surprised me how sensitive this model was to CG location, but given how short the tail moment arm is, I shouldn’t have been surprised. My model does no more than 30 seconds due to its hefty 17 gram weight, but it is fun to watch.
