Stan Stoy "Flapper" Symposium 1979
Description: Stan Stoy "Flapper" Symposium 1979
Holding the open cat. II Indoor Hand Launch Glider record 1979.
27 inch wing span, 98 in.², 21 g.
Stan came pretty close to a new record on several occasions, but on April 22, he shattered it with flights of 71.2 and 75.6 seconds. And then 82.6 second flight at West Baden in June 1979.
Bob Meuser AMA
"While success in such an endeavor is certainly an important achievement, one can't help wondering about the effect it will have on the sport. Heretofore HLG has been one of the easiest events to get into, and a good glider could be built in a 10th of the time it takes Stan to build one of his folders. And HLG has been one of our most popular events. Now if it requires 50 hours to build a HLG that will be competitive, popularity is bound to wane. Should the rules be changed? We have seen many cases where short-range personal goals have prevented, or nearly prevented, changes that were in the best interest of the long-range goals of our sport."
Reminds me of a movie ROLLER BALL. "Corporate decisions are made by corporate executives."

Stan Stoy broke into the mid 90’s using a very ingenious and temperamental folding wing glider, see Model Aviation August 1979 for more information.

"I truly missed seeing Stan Stoy who has in the past several years shown up for the IHLG event with his sophisticated "Folder” . With this folding wing Glider, Stan shows how to compensate for the fact that he does not have the strongest arm in the U.S.A."

AMA rule change, IHLG (I suppose we will no longer see the battle the brain versus brawn or the Stoy Folder versus the strong-arm flyer.) pg 64 pdf
