not really hypersonic

I don't think you can really call this a hypersonic aircraft, even if it had been as fast as it was supposed to be. It maxed out at Mach 1.88, but was intended to be capable of over Mach 2.

Still impressive for the 50s

Fair enough, supersonic, but for the plane to fly at all with those two massive outboard jets!!.... amazing.
Consider the lack of technology resources, materials, experience etc etc. Test pilot must have been very brave. Wikipedia says "The Bristol 188 is a British supersonic research aircraft built by the Bristol Aeroplane Company in the 1950s. Its length, slender cross-section and intended purpose led to its being nicknamed the "Flaming Pencil"

Thank you hippocket for a very interesting 3-view of a plane that I hadn't even heard of!
