Mini Gymallo
Description: Back in the April 1970 issue of American Aircraft Modeler there was a simple, rubber-powered Rogallo winged model called the Insect. It had the early style Rogallo wing with the extremely sharp nose angle, making for a very inefficient wing. I was going to build this model but I was concerned that it would be difficult to control its turn radius, since it has no rudder to effect a turn. I had flown the Gymallo radio control airplane for many years and it has a rudder and elevator to control turn radius and pitch respectively. I decided to build a half scale rubber powered version of the Gymallo radio control model. The Mini Gymallo wing uses a quantity of four 12 inch long 1/16” square spruce or bass wood sticks. The wing’s sail (covering material) is made from a very thin plastic bag found in the produce section of a local grocery store. This plastic material weighs around 1 gram per square foot and is very strong. I did some tests to determine that E6000 industrial adhesive bonds spruce to the plastic bag material, although I have read that Aleene’s glue for foam may also work. E6000 has a very strong odor that takes about a month to completely dissipate, so I kept the completed wing in a plastic storage container to eliminate the smell from stinking up the house! The completed prototype model weighs 8.4 grams without the rubber motor. The model flies for around 1 minute under a 28 foot ceiling with 1,500 winds on a 22 inch loop (44” long untied) of 0.085” wide super sport rubber. This model could be built lighter using 1/16” square balsa for the four wing sticks and Gampi Tissue or Y2K mylar for the wing sail material.

looks great! and a lot of fun

I saw a gymallo at a local RC swap meet a couple weeks ago with all the rc gear to go with it for 50$. I should have bought it. Instead I can build this one!
