Miles M-13 "Hobby" Peanut
Description: The "Hobby" was built by F.K. Miles as both a research aircraft and to compete in the 1937 King's Cup race. Although records indicate that the "Hobby" was registered as G-AFAW on 26 April 1937, all the photos of the aircraft that I found showed it to be without registration numbers. I have absolutely no idea what the cryptic "U2" displayed on the fuselage signifies. Unfortunately, its very clean, hydraulically-actuated, landing gear apparently did not...actuate...reliably, and the "Hobby" did not compete. Mr. Miles demonstrated the aircraft on the last day of the race, and apparently flew it for a few months thereafter. In 1938, Mr. Miles sold the "Hobby" to the Royal Aircraft Establishment. Because of its small size, the RAE was able to install the "Hobby" inside a wind tunnel. I was attracted to this airplane because of its name - "Hobby" seemed particularly apt. I was surprised to learn that in this context, "Hobby" refers to a small bird of prey, and not to our obsession(s).
