Lil Stubby II 2015 Science Olympiad Wright Stuff
Description: The Lil Stubby II is a cousin to the Lil Longster and is designed to qualify for the 2015 Sci-Oly Wright Stuff class “C” (high school) event. I was mentoring the Raisbeck Aviation High School kids with their Sci-Oly Wright Stuff models and noticed that they kept breaking the long, skinny tail booms. Some of the booms had a half a dozen breaks in them!

I got to thinking about designing a new model similar to the late Gil Coughlin’s unlimited AMA cub design, because it is very short and does not have a tail boom. I designed the Lil Stubby prototype model and it needed a fairly large blob of clay on the nose to get it to balance properly. The Lil Stubby II is almost identical to the Lil Stubby prototype, except that it has a 2 inch longer motor stick, which eliminates most of the clay ballast weight on the nose. This model features a removable and adjustable wing.

The 2015 class “C” Wright Stuff rules allow the competitor to build a propeller or use a pre-assembled propeller, as long as it does not exceed 24 cm in diameter. The Ikara propellers are the most efficient pre-assembled propellers readily available and Ikara offers a propeller builder’s kit, available from Freedom Flight Models, for those competitors who wish to build their own prop. The Lil Stubby II uses the Ikara Bull Dog propeller cut down to 24 cm, although Freedom Flight Models now sells a new 24 cm Icara Prop that is narrower than the Ikara broad blade prop. The Freedom Flight Models prop pitch gage was used to reduce the prop’s pitch angle to around 30 degrees.

Boron is the only material not allowed on the 2015 Sci-Oly Wright Stuff model airplanes, and there is no restriction on the type of covering material used. My Lil Stubby II was covered with inexpensive store bought domestic tissue (preshrunk with water) and it still ended up slightly under the 8 gram minimum empty weight rule. Rubber motors for this event are limited to a maximum of 2 grams.
